Mura Knit Blanket Square Pattern

You won’t believe more knits than purls make the Mura Square, but it’s true. This 8 inch blanket square is interesting for everyone from beginners to experienced knitters. 

Learn how to knit this easy blanket square pattern to add to your beautiful blanket. This free knitting pattern is an 8 row repeat with all the right side rows knit.

It works up quickly in worsted weight yarn. Choose a wool blend yarn for a cozy blanket. Or use a cotton yarn for kitchen use.

The simple garter stitch rows contrast the stockinette stitch rows and look great in a solid color. If you prefer knit stitches to purls then this is the pattern for you.

Combining individual squares is a great way to customize a knit baby blanket without cast on a large number of stitches at one time. It’s a quick win when you can finish a square in one sitting!

Afghan squares also make it easy to adjust your blanket size and shape. You can decide if you’re making a knit throw blanket or a square baby blanket.

The Yarn

The Mura is knit in worsted weight yarn. The grey blanket square is knit with Brava Worsted an acrylic yarn in Dove Heather.

This blanket square uses less than one skein of yarn. It’s a great idea for using up yarn scraps in different colors. Colorful squares would make a gorgeous blanket!

Stitches/Abbreviations (US Terms)

This knitting pattern is made with all basic stitches. Here are links to tutorials if you need them.

BO – bind off 

CO – cast on

K – knit

P – purl

rep – repeat

RS – right side

st (s) – stitch (es)

WS – wrong side

How to Make the Mura Knit Blanket Square

This easy knit blanket square works up quickly in worsted weight yarn.

Materials

  • 65 yd / 60 yd Brava Worsted, a #4 medium worsted weight yarn (100% acrylic, 218 yd / 100 g), color: Dove Heather (1) ball.

Tools

  • (US Size 7) 4.5 mm needles , I use my circular needle but it's knit flat so you can use straight needles.
  • Tapestry needle
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Optional locking stitch marker to place marker on the front of your square.

Instructions

Notes

  1. All measurements are taken before blocking.
    Stitch multiple is 7, plus 6.

Gauge

  1. 4” / 10 cm x 4” / 10 cm = 16 sts x 32 rows in stockinette
    8 sts in pattern = 2”; 8 rows in pattern = 1”

Finished Size

  1. 8” / 20.5 cm x 8” / 20.5 cm

Pattern

  1. CO 34
  2. Row 1. K
  3. Row 2. K6, *P1, K6 rep * to end of row.
  4. Row 3. (RS) K
  5. Row 4. K2, *P2, K5 rep * until 4 sts left, P2, K2.

  6. Row 5. K
  7. Row 6. Rep Row 2.
  8. Row 7. K
  9. Row 8. P

  10. Rep these 8 rows for 8 reps total = 8”.
  11. BO.
  12. Block square to size.
