Free Chunky Hat Pattern In Super Bulky Yarn

The Mura Beanie is a fast knit hat featuring a fun textured pattern. This cozy hat is knit in #6 superbulky yarn so you can make many as gifts.

Chunky yarn makes such a quick project which is helpful when it’s gift making time. This Wool Ease Thick & Quick from Lion Brand Yarn is not only a quick yarn it’s so warm for the fall and winter months, and comes in some amazing color ways.

Pattern Snapshot

WOULD I MAKE THIS AGAIN? Absolutely.

The pattern calls for two needles sizes. We’ll start with the smaller ones for our brim which is knit in stretchy rib stitch. Then we’ll switch to the larger ones for the hat body.

Materials

• 60 yds of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick a #6 superbulky weight yarn (80% acrylic, 20% wool, 106 yd (97 m) per 170 g skein) in shade Fisherman—1 skein.

  • 9 mm (US Size 13) circular needles, or needle size needed to meet gauge.
  • 10 mm (US Size 15) circular needle, or size needed to meet gauge.
  • Yarn needle, Measuring tape, Scissors, Stitch marker(s)

Notes

  1. This pattern is worked bottom up, in the round. You will need to do magic loop method.
  2. Stitch multiple is 7.

CO – cast on

k – knit

k2tog – knit two together

p – purl

Gauge

9 sts x 13 rnds (after blocking) to 4” (10 cm) measured in St st.

Sizing

The finished hat fits most adult heads size 20” – 22” (51 – 56 cm) circumference.

Adjustments

To make a different size hat you can add or subtract 7 sts to the cast on.

How To Knit Chunky Textured Hat

Materials

  • 9 mm (Size US 13) circular needle, or size needed to meet gauge.
  • 10 mm (Size US 15) circular needle, or size needed to meet gauge.
  • Tapestry needle, Measuring tape, Scissors, Stitch markers.

Instructions

Brim
Using smaller needles, CO 42 sts being careful not to twist join in the round. Place marker at beginning of rnd. Slip sm for every rnd.

Rnd 1. *K1, p1 rep from * around.
Rnds 2 – 6. Rep rnd 1 for 6 rnds or until work measures 2” tall.

Hat Body
Use larger needles.
Rnd 1. K all.
Rnd 2. *K1, P6, rep from * around.
Rnd 3. K all.
Rnd 4. K3, *p2, k5, rep from * until 4 sts left, p2, k2.
Rnd 5. K all.
Rnd 6. Rep rnd 2.
Rnd 7. K all.
Rnd 8. K all.

Repeat rounds 1 – 8 again.

Decrease Crown
Rnd 1. K3, *k2tog, k5, rep from * until 4 sts left, k2tog, k2. (36 sts)
Rnd 2. *K1, p5, rep from * around.
Rnd 3. K all.
Rnd 4. *K4, k2tog, rep from * around. (30 sts)
Rnd 5. K all.
Rnd 6. *K1, p4, rep from * around.
Rnd 7. K1, *k2tog, k3 rep from * until 4 sts left, k2tog, k2. (24 sts)
Rnd 8. *K2, k2tog rep from * around. (18 sts)
Rnd 9. *K1, k2tog rep from * around. (12 sts)
Cut a long tail and pull it through the last stitch. Add a pom pom to the top of the hat if you like now. Use long tail to sew hole closed.

Knit hat in cream yarn with grey faux fur pom, needles and scissors.

Weave in all loose ends.
