The Abruzzo Beanie is made with simple knit stitches and purl stitches. This bottom up hat is a quick knit in super bulky yarn!

The textured hat design is achieved with alternating sections of 2 x 2 ribbing. It’s a simple pattern that’s relaxing to knit!

The free knitting pattern includes sizes for baby, toddler, child, teen, medium and large adult. Add a pom pom or leave it off, this beanie is fun to customize for the perfect gift this season!

Toddler 1 – 3 yrs ~ 45 yd (42 m)

Child 4+ yrs ~ 50 yd (46 m)

Teen/ Sm Adult ~ 60 yd (55 m)

Med/Lg Adult ~ 65 yd (60 m)

Notes

  1. This pattern is worked bottom up, in the round. You will need to do magic loop method.
  2. Stitch multiple is 4.

9 sts x 14 rnds (after blocking) to 4” (10 cm) measured in pattern

Fit/Adjustments

This hat has a suggested 2” / 5 cm of negative ease. This means the finished hat is 2” / 5 cm smaller than the actual head circumference, and will stretch to fit. 

This free hat pattern is intended to fit like a beanie, for a slouchy hat you can add another set of repeats to the body of the hat to increase the height at least 2″ before moving on to the decrease section.

The pattern includes different sizes for head circumferences: 

To fit age ~ head circumferences: 

Baby 0 – 12 mos ~ 13” – 15” (33 cm – 38 cm)

Toddler 1 – 3 yrs ~ 15” – 17” (38 cm – 43 cm)

Child 4+ yrs ~ 17” – 19” (43 cm – 48.5 cm)

Teen/Sm Adult ~ 19” – 21”(48.5 cm – 53.5 cm)

Med/Lg Adult ~ 20” – 22” (51 – 56 cm)

US Terms

CO – cast on; I use the alternating cable cast on but you can cast on a different way if you prefer.

k – knit

k2tog – knit two together

p – purl

p2tog – purl two together

The Abruzzo Beanie is a cozy knit perfect early winter mornings. This simple stitch pattern is easy to memorize and results in a beautiful basketweave texture. Free knitting pattern includes 5 sizes!

Materials

  • 40 yd / 37 m - 60 yd /55 m of #6 super bulky weight yarn; pictured in Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick (80% Acrylic; 20% Wool, 87 yd/80m, 5 oz/140 g); color: Fossil 1 ball.
  • tapestry needle, measuring tape, scissors

Tools

  • 9mm (US Size 13) circular needles, or needle sizes needed to meet gauge.

Instructions

    Baby [Toddler, Child, Teen/Sm Adult, Med/Lg Adult]
    CO 28 [32, 36, 40, 44] sts using the alternating cable cast on, join to work in the round.

    Rnds 1 - 4. *K2, p2; rep * around.
    Rnds 5 - 8. * P2, k2; rep * around.
    Rnds 9 - 12. *K2, p2; rep * around.
    Rnds 13 - 16. *P2, k2; rep * around. = 5” tall
    Stop here for Baby size. Go to Decrease.

    Rnds 17 - 20. *K2, p2; rep * around. = 6.5” tall
    Stop here for Toddler + Child sizes. Go to Decrease.

    Rnds 21 - 24. *P2, k2; rep * around. = 8” tall
    Stop here for Teen + Adult sizes. Go to Decrease.

    Decrease
    Round count starts over.

    Baby, Teen, Adult
    Rnd 1. *K2tog, p2; rep * around. (21, 30, 33 sts)
    Rnd 2. *K1, p2tog; rep * around. (14, 20, 22 sts)
    Rnd 3. *K2tog; rep * around. (7, 10, 11 sts)

    Toddler, Child
    Rnd 1. *P2tog, k2 rep * around. (24, 27 sts)
    Rnd 2. *P1, k2tog rep * around. (16, 18 sts)
    Rnd 3. *P2tog; rep * around. (8, 9 sts)

    Last Round:
    Baby, Med/Lg Adult
    K1, *k2tog rep * around. (4, 6 sts)

    Child
    P1, *p2tog rep * around. (5 sts)

    Toddler, Teen/Sm Adult
    *K2tog; rep * around. (4, 5 sts)

    Finishing
    Cut a long tail. 8-12" is plenty of length.
    Weave long tail through all live stitches, remove needles and pull closed.
    Sew hole closed
    Weave in ends.
