How To Make The Extended Double Crochet Tutorial
The edc is an extended double crochet. Sometimes you may see this stitch abbreviated as exdc. Learn how to make this stitch in the detailed tutorial below!
And it’s just what you might think from the name, a double crochet stitch that’s extended, or taller. The only difference is you make it taller you simply start with a chain 1 before making a regular double crochet.
Not only are these taller, but when worked over several rows it’s great way to make a stitch pattern with a different texture and lovely drape. I love how the esc works up in the Gia Ruffle Sleeve Top and the ehdc in the Raspberry Ridges blanket. Both these are free patterns so check them out.

How To Make An Extended Double Crochet
Learn how to make the edc or extended double crochet.
Materials
- This stitch works with any yarn. Here I'm using a DK, lightweight yarn.
Tools
- Choose a crochet hook that's compatible with your yarn.
Instructions
Start with any number of chains, plus 3. For this tutorial I'll start with a foundation chain of 13, this makes 11 extended double crochet stitches if you count the skipped chains as the first stitch.
Ch 13
Row 1. In the 4th chain stitch from your hook *yo, insert hook into ch, yo, pull up 1 loop (3 loops on hook),
Yo and pull through first loop on your hook (3 loops on hook), (this makes the extended part),
Now you'll finish as you would a normal dc: yo and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook),
Yo and pull through last 2 loops. Skipped chs count as first st.
Row 1 (cont). Rep from * in each ch across, turn. [11 sts]
Row 2. Ch 3 (counts as first edc), in next st: yo, insert hook into st, yo, pull up 1 loop (3 loops on hook), yo and pull through 1 loop on your hook (3 loops on hook), yo and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yo and pull through last 2 loops.
Row 2 (cont.). Rep in each st across, turn. [11 sts]
Row 3. Ch 3 (counts), edc in each st across, turn. [11 sts]
For the next row and each subsequent row you will repeat row 3 until you reach your desired length.
