Learn how to knit the knitted cast on. This easy cast on is a short tail cast on that’s simple to learn, even for beginning knitters.

Casting on can be one of the most challenging parts for new knitters. The knitted cast on is a great one for any knitting project.

To learn the knitted cast on you’ll need a pair of needles and a ball of yarn. For this tutorial I’m using a #6 superbulky yarn and 8mm knitting needles.

This is a short tail cast on, meaning you don’t need to leave much yarn. Do measure a length of yarn that’s at least 6″ for the tail, so you have enough to weave in the end.

There are many different methods for casting on. It’s helpful when you’re new to knitting to try different cast ons to find one that works for your project.

Try not to cast on too tightly, as you’ll need to insert your needle when you’re ready to start knitting stitches on the next row.

Learn how to knit the knitted cast on. This easy cast on is a short tail cast on that's simple to learn, even for beginning knitters.

Materials

Any weight yarn. I'm using Wool Ease Thick & Quick, a #6 superbulky yarn.

Tools

Knitting needles to match your yarn. For this tutorial I'm using my Clover Takumi in Size 11 / 8mm.

Instructions

Start with a slip knot on your left hand knitting needle.
Insert the right hand needle tip, knit wise, into slip knot.
Yarn over. We're not using the tail at all for this cast on, so this is the working yarn going over the right needle tip and my index finger to the left.
Pull the yarn through to knit a stitch, but do not slip the first stitch off the needle yet.
For the next step transfer the stitch you just knit on to the left handed needle.
Now insert your needle into the stitch you just knit.
Knit it, but leave it on the needle.
Then slip it on to the left hand needle.
Repeat steps 5-7 for the next stitch until you've cast on to the required number of stitches, and then you're ready to begin the first row of knitting!
