The Giana Cowl is an easy knitting pattern perfect for beginners. Just one skein of chunk weight yarn is all you need to knit up this cowl

This cozy streamlined neck warmer is a stylish and convenient way to wear a cowl.

The Giana knits up fast in chunky yarn. The garter stitch makes this knitting pattern a breeze, especially for beginning knitters.

Knit up this cowl as an easy rectangle. Or if you prefer knitting in the round, then that’s also an option.

I love a chunky knit, it’s just so cozy.

This one might be knit with bulky yarn, but it’s slim fitting. It’s tall enough to give me neckline coverage, which is perfect for cool mornings.

My cowl is 24″ around in length. This is easy to adjust if you want to knit a longer, draping cowl for yourself. Just add yarn!

I just love, love how squishy the Giana is around my neck. It’s cozy without being overwhelming.

This is a busy mom’s cowl for sure. Nothing dangling or swinging around while tending to the kiddos.

Yarn

The Giana Cowl is knit in a squishy blend of acrylic and wool. This makes it warm and washable. The yarn for this cowl pattern is a #5 bulky yarn.

Can I substitute yarns? Of course, you can. Unfortunately the Lion’s Pride Wool Spun I used has been discontinued. However, Lion Brand recently released their Hue + Me Yarn, which is a comparable acrylic + wool blend #5 bulky yarn.

Another popular #5 bulky yarn is Homespun. This yarn would make a beautiful knit wrap. I’m also partial to the look of Red Heart Dreamy. This brushed yarn gives your projects an ultra soft look and feel.

I used a Gemstones Stripes Homespun yarn in my Umbria Shawl beginner knitting pattern. The Nebbia Scarf + Sweater crochet patterns feature Red Heart Dreamy in Ivory.

For a limited time this yarn is back in stock! Get Woolspun from Lion Brand* while you can. It’s a squishy favorite.

Stitch

This cowl is knit with the simple garter stitch. This means you knit both sides.

So you can knit this one flat on straight needles and seam it. Or you can knit it in the round or circulars.

I include instructions for both.

Gauge

4″ x 4″ = 10 sts x 22 rows of garter stitch

Construction

The instructions include how to knit this cowl flat or in the round.

If you knit this pattern flat, you will turn your work after each row.

The number of stitches you cast on will equal how long your cowl is and you will knit it to height.

Level

Beginner

Finished Dimensions

24″/61cm long x 9″/23cm tall

Fit/Adjustment

As written, the Giana Cowl is a one skein pattern. Any adjustments may require more yarn so plan accordingly.

To make your cowl longer, cast on any number of stitches. If you are matching gauge then for every 10 sts you add it will increase by 4″.

Likewise you can cast on fewer stitches. Every 10 stitches, at the given gauge, will equal 4″ less.

To make your cowl taller, repeat as many rows as needed.
