The single crochet stitch makes a great scarf. It’s nice and tight so the scarf will be warm.

You can really see the stitch definition and colors here. I think they compliment each other quite well.
Plus the single crochet works great for men’s accessories. Since I’m using a print yarn that changes colors, using a simple stitch like this or half double crochet works best.
The scarf is totally beginner friendly. You only need to know how to chain, single crochet and finish off.
You can also customize this scarf easily. Since it’s single crochet you can make it as wide or narrow as you like.
Yarn
For this tutorial I use a #5 bulky/chunky weight yarn. For a beginner, using a chunky or super bulky yarn makes “seeing” the stitches so much easier. Plus I love this Quarry Print in Lion Brand’s Woolspun.
Since it’s a print, the yardage is slightly less than a solid color in the same yarn.
You might wonder if you need to use the exact yarn I did. The short answer is no.
You can substitute another yarn, I recommend a similar #5 weight yarn to get a similar result to the scarf in the picture. Check out my post on how to choose the best yarn for a scarf.
Lion Brand has another #5 yarn I like, Color Made Easy. I use this yarn in my Ava Blanket. The colors are gorgeous.

If you also knit, then you might like the Giana Knit Pocket Shawl pattern with Woolspun in Honey.
The crocheters also have a pocket shawl in Woolspun, the Ana Pocket Shawl in the color Plum.
For a limited time this yarn is back in stock! Get Woolspun from Lion Brand* while you can. It’s a squishy favorite.
Stitch
This simple scarf uses the single crochet stitch. It’s a total beginner scarf.
I love the color changing print yarn for basic stitches. The yarn can do it’s thing and the stitch doesn’t take away from it.

Materials
- 4 balls of Lion Brand’s Woolspun* (100g/3.5oz ea) in Quarry Print, or 432yds/395m of a comparable #5 chunky weight yarn. *I used 3 balls and my scarf is 54″ which feels just a tad short, that’s why I recommend 4 balls.
- 6.5mm US K-10.5 crochet hook, I’m using my turquoise Odyssey*
- Large eye yarn needle for weaving in ends.
- Scissors
Notes
- Ch 1 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch.
Stitches/Abbreviations (US Terms)
ch(s)-chain(s)
rep-repeat
st(s)-stitch(es)
Gauge
4″/10cm x 4″/10cm = 11 sc x 12 rows of sc
This means that when I measure 4″ across my scarf there are 11 single crochet stitches.
If I measure vertically on my scarf, there are 12 rows of sc.
Checking gauge is how crocheters match the designer’s tension in the pattern, so you get the same size.
Matching gauge for this scarf is not super important. It’s ok if yours is a little wider/narrow or longer/shorter.
Checking gauge is super important on fitted items like hats and garments though.

Fit/Adjustment
To crochet a scarf of a different width you can adjust the number of chains you start with, noting that one will be a turning chain.
I use 20 chains, which gives me 19 single crochet stitches. This yields about a 7″ wide scarf with my yarn/hook/gauge.
This scarf, with 3 balls of Woolspun (108yds ea) is 54″ long. To crochet a longer scarf, just add more yarn. Follow the repeat for as long as you need, or until you run out of yarn.
Anywhere between 54″-76″ are common lengths for this type of scarf. Some will calculate length based on height or “wingspan” of the arms.
If you want to form this into an infinity scarf then you can sew together the ends, creating loop like the Retta infinity cowl pattern.
