The Yarn

Crocheted with Charisma Tweed Yarn by Loops & Thread in Cream, this #5 bulky weight acrylic yarn works up super soft and supple.

As this is a thicker #5 chunky weight yarn, substituting a #6 superbulky may also be a good option. The best way to tell if your yarn and hook will work is to make a gauge swatch.

  • 558 yds/510m of #5 bulky weight yarn, pictured in Charisma Tweed Yarn by Loops & Thread (100% Acrylic, 93 yd / 85 m, 3 oz / 85 g) in Cream.

Notes

  1. Ch 3 counts as a stitch, I highly recommend using a ch 3 alternative, like one of these.

Skill Level

Easy

Gauge

4”/10cm x 4”/10cm= 7 dc x 4 rows of dc, after blocking

See note under adjustments if you’re not meeting gauge.

Construction

This rectangle wrap is worked sideways in a one row repeat. The starting chain will determine how wide it is (or tall) and the number of repeat rows you crochet will determine how long (how long it wraps around you).

Stitches/Abbreviations

US Terms

ch(s) – chain(s)

dc – double crochet

rep – repeat

sk – skip the indicated stitch

sl st – slip stitch

st(s) – stitch(es)

Finished Dimensions

23” / 58 cm wide x 74” / 188 cm long

Adjustments

Here are a few different ways to adjust your shawl.

I found my #5 yarn to be very fluffy, compared to others I’ve worked with. If you have trouble meeting gauge with a 10mm hook, instead of going up a hook size you might try increasing your foundation chain instead.

To increase your wrap’s width by another center repeat and keep 12 stiches on either end, increase your starting chain by a multiple of 3. For example, Ch 43, and follow the center repeat 1 more time. Or Ch 46 and follow the center rep 2 more times, and so on.

On either side of the center lace pattern there are 12 dcs. To widen your wrap by adding more dcs to both sections (and leave the center section the same), increase your starting ch by a multiple of 2. Then distribute those sts to either side of the center section. For example, Ch 42, and instead of making 12 dcs on both sides of the center, you would make 13 dcs on both sides, and keep the center section the same. Or Ch 44, and make 14 dc on both sides, and so forth and so on.

These instructions will make more sense once you read over the pattern.

Or you can try using the hook and yarn that work best together and just know your end result will likely not be the exact size as the sample.
