The Rino is a fun and fit round neck sweater in 8 children’s sizes. This sweater is easy to knit with simple stitches and construction.

The top down design provides a nicely shaped neckline that’s worked flat. But after the yoke is complete it’s knit in the round. The speckle yarn in cake pop makes a fab kids’ sweater!

Notes

A kid’s sweater needs to be as hard wearing and versatile as they are in their play. With playful pops of color this speckle yarn does all the color work for you. A simple knit pullover features classic styling in the ribbed hem and sleeve cuffs. The generous round neckline allows for easy off and on. Knit in machine washable worsted weight yarn this sweater is easy to wear and easy to care for.

Construction

The chest and the upper back are knitted flat before joining at the shoulders. The lower body of this sweater is worked bottom up in the round. The sleeves are picked up around the armholes and knitted in the round.

Gauge

18 sts x 24 rnds (after blocking) to 4 in (10 cm) measured over St st using x 4.5 mm (US 7) needles 

Sizing

2 [4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16]

To fit 21” [23, 25, 26.5, 28, 30, 31.5, 32.5] in (53.5 [58.5, 63.5, 67.5, 71, 76, 80, 82.5] cm) circumference at chest.

Finished Measurements

23” [25, 27.5, 28.5, 30, 32, 33.5, 34.5] in (58.5 [63.5, 70, 72.5, 76, 81.5, 85, 87.5] cm) circumference at the chest.

Intended to be worn with 2 – 4” (5 – 10 cm) of positive ease at the chest. 

The model wears size 6 in shade Cake Pop on a 24.5” chest with 3″ (7.5 cm) of positive ease at the chest.

Pattern Instructions 

Upper Back 

Using larger needles, cast on 52 [56, 64, 64, 68, 72, 76, 78] sts using the cable cast-on. 

Set-up Row (RS): K 11 [12, 16, 15, 17, 18, 20, 20], place locking stitch marker through cast-on edge, k 30 [32, 32, 34, 34, 36, 36, 38], place locking stitch marker through cast-on edge, k to end. These markers indicate the placement of the back neck. 

Row 1 (WS): K1, p to last st, k1. 

Row 2 (RS): Knit all. 

Rep Rows 1 & 2: 10 [11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17] more times, then rep Row 1 one more time. Total rows = 32 [36, 38, 40, 42, 46, 50, 52] measuring 5.25” [6, 6.25, 6.75, 7, 7.75, 8.25, 8.75]” from cast-on edge.

Cut yarn and place 52 [56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76, 78] sts for the Upper Back on a stitch holder or waste yarn. In this video I show you how.

Left Shoulder

In this video I show you how to do the shoulders through the chest.

Using larger needles and with RS facing, pick up and knit 11 [12, 16, 15, 17, 18, 20, 20] sts along the Left Shoulder, removing the locking stitch marker at the neck edge. 

Row 1 (WS): K1,p until last st, k1.

Row 2 (RS): K all.

Set-Up Row (WS): K1, p 7 [8, 12, 11, 13, 14, 16, 16], pm, p2, k1. 

Increase

Row 1 (RS): K to m, sm, m1L, k to end. +1 st
Row 2 (WS): K1, p to last st, k1. 

Rep Rows 1 & 2: 8 [9, 9, 9, 9, 10, 10, 10] more times. + 8 [9, 9, 9, 9, 10, 10, 10] sts. 

Cut yarn and place the 20 [22, 26, 25, 27, 29, 31, 31] sts for the Left Shoulder on a stitch holder/waste yarn, removing the stitch marker.

Using larger needles and with RS facing, pick up and knit 11 [12, 16, 15, 17, 18, 20, 20] sts along the Right Shoulder, removing the locking stitch marker at the neck edge. 

Row 1 (WS): K1,p until last st, k1.

Row 2 (RS): K all.

Set-up Row (WS): K1, p2, pm, p to last st, k1. 

Increase

Row 1 (RS): K to m, m1R, sm, k to end. +1 st
Row 2 (WS): K1, p to last st, k1. 

Rep Rows 1 & 2: 8 [9, 9, 9, 9, 10, 10, 10] more times. + 8 [9, 9, 9, 9, 10, 10, 10] sts.

Do not cut yarn. Place 20 [22, 26, 25, 27, 29, 31, 31] sts for the Left Shoulder behind the 20 [22, 26, 25, 27, 29, 31, 31] sts for the Right Shoulder on the LH needle, removing the stitch marker. 40 [44, 52, 50, 54, 58, 62, 62] sts.

Chest 

Next row (RS): K 20 [22, 26, 25, 27, 29, 31, 31], turn and cast on 12 [12, 12, 14, 14, 14, 14, 16] sts using the Cable Cast-On, turn and k to end. 52 [56, 64, 64, 68, 72, 76, 78] sts

Row 1 (WS): K1, p to last st, k1. 

Row 2 (RS): K all. 

Rep Rows 1 & 2:  2 [3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10] more times, then rep Row 1 one more time. Total rows = 32 [36, 38, 40, 42, 46, 50, 52] to match upper back.

Lower Body 

Place the 52 [56, 64, 64, 68, 72, 76, 78] sts for the Upper Back on the LH needle, after the 52 [56, 64, 64, 68, 72, 76, 78] sts for the chest, preparing the stitches for magic loop. You will now be working the Lower Body in the round. 104 [112, 128, 128, 136, 144, 152, 156] sts. 

Set-up Rnd: Join to knit in the round. Pm to mark BOR. You will join again as you come to the second armhole.

Knit for 52 [54, 64, 74, 72, 80, 88, 86] more rnds or until sweater is desired length. Note that hem adds 1” to length. Target length 14” [15, 17, 19, 19, 21, 23, 23].

Change to smaller needles. 

Next rnd: *K1, p1; rep from * to end. 

Rep last rnd 5 more times. Bind off in the round using the Tubular Bind-Off. 

Sleeves (Both) 

Using larger needles and with RS facing, pick up and knit 48 [54, 56, 64, 68, 74, 78, 86] sts around the armhole, starting at the underarm. Pm to mark BOR. 

Stitches picked up on needle at armhole to knit sleeves.

Knit for 6 [6, 6, 6, 12, 12, 12, 12] rnds. 

Dec Rnd: K1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. 2 sts dec’d. 

Size 2 Rep Dec Rnd every 5th rnd 3 more times, then every 6th rnd 7 more more times. 26 sts.

Size 4 Rep Dec Rnd every 5th rnd 3 more times, then every 6th rnd 8 more more times. 30 sts.

Size 6 Rep Dec Rnd every 5th rnd 3 more times, then every 6th rnd 8 more more times. 32 sts.

Size 8 Rep Dec Rnd every 4th rnd 1 more times, then every 5th rnd 14 more more times. 32 sts.

Neckband 

Using smaller needles and with RS facing, pick up and knit 46 [50, 50, 52, 52, 56, 56, 58] sts around the Front Neck and 30 [32, 32, 34, 34, 36, 36, 38] sts around the Back Neck. Along the neck’s cast-on edges pick up approx. stitch for stitch, and along the shaped edges, pick up approx. 4 sts every 5 rows. Pm to mark BOR. 76 [82, 82, 86, 86, 92, 92, 96] sts.

Neckline stitches picked up on needles for ribbing.

Next rnd: *K1, p1; rep from * to end. 

Rep last rnd 5 more times. Bind off in the round using the Tubular Bind-Off.
