The are different ways of decreasing the number of stitches and they result in stitches that lean in different directions. The ssk is a right leaning decrease. It works well when you are working in stockinette stitch and decrease stitches are on the right side.

Since k2tog decreases are opposite to ssk decreases you can create a balanced look, especially with visible decreases on the knit side.

Written Instructions

The first step to making a ssk is to slip the first two stitches knit-wise (both needle tips will face the same direction as you insert it), from the left-hand needle to the right. The slipped stitch is twisted, similar to knitting through the back loops.

Now to make these two into a single stitch, you’re going to insert the left needle into both the loops on your right needle (here the needle tips face opposite directions). This puts your needles in position to knit these two.

Wrap the working yarn over the right needle and pull through the loop, sliding it off on to the working needle. Now the stitch count has one less knit stitch.
