The Alba is an easy, chunky knit hat pattern. Just one ball of #6 superbulky yarn knits this beginner friendly hat pattern.
I’ve been enjoying my Alba knit hat on my morning walks. It’s a comfy hat that keeps my ears warm.
I love knitting chunky hats for gifts. They’re quick and easy to customize.

And knitting with super bulky yarn means a fast knit. Super bulky yarn is great for beginning knitters because it’s so easy to see your stitches.
The Pom Pom Hat has been on trend for a while and seems to be staying. Poms pair perfectly with the Alba.

Yarn
This hat use a #6 super bulky weight yarn. For the hat in the picture I use Lion Brand’s Hometown USA.
The color is Napa Valley Pinot. I love how the Hometown USA yarns are shiny.
They come in so many colors. Plus it’s just enough yarn to crochet or knit a hat with.
You can use a different #6 weight yarn. I love how Wool Ease Thick and Quick works up.
One of my favorite color ways is Fossil. The Veneto Hat + Scarf Crochet Patterns use this yarn.

Stitch
The Alba is knit with the basic knit and purl stitches. The main hat pattern is a 4 row repeat of these two stitches.
There is one round of decreases at the crown. I use the k2tog stitch for this round.
To k2tog, knit two together, you knit like normal, but you go through two stitches at once. This joins them together into one stitch.
The Alba Hat shares the same stitch pattern as the Alba Scarflette. This scarflette is knit flat though.

1.5″/3.8cm = 3 sts in the main pattern (k, p, k) or (p, k, P)
Level
Easy
Construction
This hat is worked bottom up in the round. We’ll start with a basic rib stitch for the brim.
The body of the hat is 4 rnd repeat. To close up the top we’ll do one round of decreases and finish off by threading the tail through the remaining live stitches.
Fit/Adjustment
Negative Ease = 2”/5cm where hat ribbing is intentionally 2”/5cm smaller than head circumference and stretches to fit.
To fit age (head circumference): baby 6-12 mos (16”/40.6cm) toddler (18”/45.7cm), child (20”/50.8cm), teen/sm adult (21”/53.3cm), med/lg adult (22”/56cm)
To adjust the pattern it’s often easiest to go up or down a size in the pattern. Changing the length is a simple matter of knitting more or less rounds. I suggest stopping after a round 4 rep.
If you need to customize the size further, you can add or subtract from my cast on in 2s. So CO 38, can become 36, 34, 32, etc. for a smaller hat. And likewise you can add in 2s for a larger size, i.e. CO 46, can become 48, 50, etc.

I will be making this hat as soon as I finish the baby blankets I have going now. Thank you for sharing
You’re welcome, I’m glad you like it!
When working the crown you only mention the K2Tog once on row 4. Do I repeat those four rows again?
Hi Kandy,
Thanks for reaching out with your question. For this crown on this one, it’s only one set of the 4 row repeat. If you would like to repeat and decrease again, you can but will likely need DPNs, as there will not be enough stitches on some sizes to use magic loop method.
I hope this helps!
