Easy Chunky Knit Blanket Pattern The Nocca Blanket
The Nocca Blanket knits up beautifully in chunky yarn. This easy knitting pattern is enjoyable for beginners and experienced knitters alike.
This easy blanket is as relaxing to knit, as it is cozy. Enjoy knitting a simple four row repeat to your favorite audiobook or tv show.
I love a cozy, chunky blanket. My kids are especially big fans of blankets.
They make a good excuse to knit up a soft blanket for them. Since they’ve been home there’s lots of reading all over the house.
It’s great to see them snuggled up with a book and a favorite knit blanket.

3 in 1
knitting pattern bundle
This pattern pack includes knitting patterns for 3 easy blankets to knit for family, friends or your home.
Can I substitute yarns?
Absolutely. You can use any #6 superbulky weight yarn in this blanket pattern.
I can recommend Lion Brand’s Wool Ease Thick and Quick. The Sophia Knit Blanket and the Bella Vita Blanket Knitting Patterns both features this beautiful yarn.
Another great option is the Bernat Softee Chunky yarn. This one is also 100% acrylic so it’s a great option for kids blankets.
Stitch
The Nocca Knit Blanket is made with knits and purls. The easy garter stitch border is simply knits on both sides of the blanket.
The main section of this blanket is a repeating knit and purl pattern. It makes for strong columns of stitches.
I love a great, simple knit. This knit pillow cover from Little Yellow Wheelbarrow is too cute!
The chunky knits always work up fast. Which is so gratifying when you’re pressed for time.

Construction
To knit this easy blanket you’ll start with a few rows of simple garter stitch. This will be your border.
Once you’re ready to knit the main section, you’ll start with a few knit stitches to keep that garter stitch border going. Then you’ll switch to the main stitch pattern. And finally, you’ll end each row with knit stitches for the border.
I’ve suggested you use stitch markers, if you have them, to define the border. It makes knitting these center rows easy peasy. But, of course, you need only to count the first and last stitches to knit it without the markers.
Fit/Adjustment
The chart below includes some common blanket sizes, the cast on number and estimated yarn for each size.
To make another size, cast on a stitch multiple of 2, plus 1 (so an odd number).
The border includes the first three and last three stitches of each row. You can add more stitches to your border, but keep the number of stitches for your main section an odd number.
Cast On By Blanket Sizes
- Baby (36”/91cm wide) CO 73
- Throw (54”/137cm wide) CO 109
- Twin (66”/168cm wide) CO 133
- Full (80”/203cm wide) CO 163
- Queen (90”/229cm wide) CO 183
- King (108”/274cm wide) CO 219

Hi! Love the pattern!! I have an issue smile. I have Rheumatoid arthritis and my hands can’t hold size 15 needles. I’m doing knitting (that I have not done in decades 🤗) to help decrease inflammation & increase flexibility and strength. So far can go up to 13. What would be cast on for a 40 width using 13 needles? I have 880 yards of yarn.
What abt the Bella Bita blanket? Same issues.
Thanks!!
Hope you have a great holiday season!!
Have fun & stay safe!!
I’m from Ontario Canada & we are a mess. So stay safe !

Hi Liz,
Thank you! Sorry to hear you’re suffering from arthritis, but I’m glad to hear knitting can help with this! Using the smaller size 13 needles should be totally fine, but it is going to give you a smaller blanket.
I would recommend swatching with your yarn and needles and comparing it to the pattern gauge. This will tell you big or small your blanket will be. Then you can choose a larger size, like the throw size (cast on 109), and end up with a baby size blanket, about 36″ wide. This is just an example, without swatching I really can’t tell you.
If you work up a small swatch and know how many stitches per inch, then I can assist you further.
I hope that helps! Stay warm!

I have a question, on the “main section” 2. row 6 says K3, sm, p to last 3 sts, sm, purl to the end, I’m wondering if the purl to the end after the second marker is correct since it appears to be the garter stitch border that needs to be maintained, shouldn’t it be knit to the end rather than purl?
Hi Lisa,
Thank you for your question. Yes, you are right, it is K to the end. Sorry about that! Thank you for asking, I have corrected it.
Have a good week,
Crystal
