This free crochet hat pattern includes different sizes for baby: 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, and toddlers, preschoolers, and children. There are also sizes for teens and adults.

If you prefer to just add a pom pom to the top of the hat, instead of bear ears you can totally do that! Baby hat crochet patterns are so versatile. You can add stripes, flowers, or ears to these little hats.

Or just keep it simple with your favorite yarn and basic stitches! There are so many ways to customize cute hats for kids.

Yarn

I use Red Heart With Love in tan and ecru for this beanie pattern. This is a #4 medium worsted weight yarn so you can substitute any comparable yarn.

I can recommend Caron One Pound or Lion Brand Heartland for this pattern. There are many #4 yarns that will works for this one.

Stitch

This is an all double crochet hat pattern. We’ll start with a magic ring and increase for the crown of the hat. Since this beanie is top down, next is the sides for the height of your hat.

For the bear ears you will also use the single crochet for shaping them. The stitches include links to tutorial in the abbreviations section.

This hat is a basic double crochet beanie. It’s worked from the top down, in the round. The ears are crocheted separately and sewed on to the hat.

  2. Row 2. Ch 1, in same sc, dc in next st, 3 dc in next st, 3 dc in next st, dc in next st, sc in last st, turn. (10 sts)
  3. Row 3. Ch 1, in same sc, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, 3 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 3 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, sc in last st. (16 sts) Third round of crochet ear for bear hat.
  4. Cut yarn leave a long tail. Inner Ears

Start with a magic circle, or ch 3, sl st to join into a circle.
In CC (aran), make 2.

  1. Row 1. 6 dc in mc, pull to close in semi circle, turn.
  2. Row 2. Ch 1, first sc in same st, then dc in next st, 3 dc in next st, 3 dc in next st, dc in next st, sc in last st, turn. (10 sts)
  3. Cut yarn leave a long tail.

Assembly

  1. Sew inner ear to outer.Two crochet half circles stacked with long yarn tails.
  2. Lay finished hat flat in front of you, sew on ears, along the fold.
  3. On the right side position ears 3 rounds down for baby sizes; 4 rounds down for toddler/preschool; 5 rounds down for child/teen/sm adult size and 6 rounds down for m/l adult.

Finishing

  1. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
