Crochet Sweetheart Hat Free Pattern
The Sweetheart Hat Crochet Pattern is a free crochet hat pattern. The top down style beanie is an easy single crochet hat.
This little sweetheart hat is a perfect handmade hat for those you love! As soon as I started working on one, then all my kids wanted their own, customized to their favorite colors.
I was, of course, happy to oblige! I even got mixed up and made a green hat with grey hearts for my 3 year old.

Never miss a pattern!
He was very disappointed because he wanted a grey hat with green hearts (I can still hear his little crushed voice). Again, I was happy to crochet him another hat, as ordered.
I love working up quick little crochet hats. They’re so fast and it’s fun to make them something special. Especially when they actually wear them!
My oldest wanted a grey hat with orange hearts, then my next son wanted a blue one with grey hearts and, of course, Mr. Grey with Green hearts here.
My little daughter got white with pink hearts. Another make that she loves… unlike some things I make her.
She’s two y’all and she has opinions on what she wears and when! Thank goodness I didn’t have any preconceived notions about how I was going to dress my little girl, pfft. After 3 boys, I’m lucky if any of them are dressed!
Yarn
Anyhow, back to yarn. What colors will you make? Classic red and white? Or a subtle tone on tone? Something bright and cheery? I’d love to see your Crochet Sweetheart Hats!
I worked hard to provide this heart hat pattern in size nb to child. Since this is a single crochet hat it doesn’t have as much stretch as other stitches.
I’ve given you specific measurements so you can get the best fit possible for your little love.
Be sure to watch my quick little video on how to change colors seamlessly, if this is a new technique for you.

Notes:
- This hat pattern is worked in the round, joining the end of each round to the 1st stitch of the round with a slip stitch. Then ch 1, and begin your 1st stitch in the same stitch.
- Beginning ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
- Stitch count is very important, as the heart pattern is based on the number of stitches. Check your stitch count at the end of each round. The heart pattern is worked over 10 stitches and 6 rounds. You need a stitch count of 60 (when you’re finished increasing) to complete the pattern as written, adjust your hook and tension accordingly.
- Below I’ve included the hook and measurements for each hat.
- You will work 6 hearts total around your hat. Color a is the main color of your hat and color b is the color of your hearts and trim.
- This hat pattern is written so that the seam will be straight. If you’re used to increasing on the first stitch of a round, this pattern will have you increase at the end of a set, which helps keep that pesky seam in place.
- Just before or just after, as written in the pattern, you sc2tog you will place 2 sc in the same stitch to compensate for the stitch count. This may be the trickiest round so be sure to check your stitch count here.
Invisible Color Change Video
I’ve included a short video demonstrating the invisible color changing technique I use for this hat. You can watch the video on YouTube.

Love this hat!
Crystal, do you have this pattern in an adult size?
Hi Jackie,
Thanks for asking. Originally I did not include an adult size. However, the stitch count is the same to get the heart pattern for each size. So you can try working the pattern with a 6.5mm or 7mm crochet hook to get a 6.5-7″ diameter circle for the crown width (rounds 1-10). I get a 6.5″ circle with a 6.5mm hook, so I would use that for teen/sm adult size, and go up to a 7mm hook for md/lg adult. I hope that helps!
Thanks,
Crystal
