How to Crochet a Half Circle

In this post you’ll learn how to crochet a half circle. A half circle, or semi circle is so useful in our crochet projects.

You can turn these little half moons into ears for bear hats, or other features in your crochet project.

The shaping is simple to crochet a half circle. If you already know how to crochet full circles (like for a hat) then this semi circle pattern will be easy to do!

To crochet a half circle we’ll use the same method as crochet circles, but we’ll use fewer stitches and turn at the end of the row.

On the next row, we’ll use increase, where we place more than one stitch, to keep the half circle growing and laying flat.

Materials

  • #4 medium weight yarn, pictured in Red Heart With Love in Tan (MC) + Aran (CC)
  • 5 mm hook, or hook needed to meet gauge.
  • yarn needle, scissors, measuring tape

Notes

  1. Ch 3 counts as a stitch, I highly recommend using a ch 3 alternative, here’s my favorite.
  2. The stitch count is at the end of a row of instructions in parenthesis ( ).

Materials

  • #4 medium weight yarn, pictured in Red Heart With Love in Tan (MC) + Aran (CC)

Tools

  • 5 mm crochet hook (US Size H-8), or hook needed to meet gauge.
  • yarn needle
  • scissors
  • measuring tape

Instructions

Start with a magic circle, or ch 3, sl st to join into a circle.

  1. Row 1. Place 6 dc in the magic ring, then pull the tail to close it in semi circle, turn. Crochet half circle in brown on peach hook.
  2. Row 2. Ch 1, in first dc place a sc, in the next dc place a dc, 3 dc in next st, 3 dc in next st, dc in next st, sc in last st at end of row, and turn. (10 sts)
  3. Row 3. Ch 1, in same sc, in next stitch dc, 2 dc in next st, 3 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 3 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, in next sc. (16 sts) Third round of crochet ear for bear hat.
  4. Cut yarn leave a long tail.

You can make a smaller half circle in a differnt color, and sew them together for a pair of bear ears!

Start with a magic circle, or ch 3, sl st to join into a circle.

  1. Row 1. 6 dc in mc, pull to close in semi circle, turn.
  2. Row 2. Ch 1, in same sc, dc in next st, 3 dc in next st, 3 dc in next st, dc in next st, sc in last st, turn. (10 sts)
  3. Cut yarn leave a long tail.

If you want to add these little circles to a hat:

  1. Sew smaller half circle to larger.Two crochet half circles stacked with long yarn tails.
  2. Lay hat flat in front of you, sew on ears, along the fold.

Finishing

  1. Cut yarn and weave in loose ends.

    Notes

    You can adjust these half circles by using a smaller hook, or by repeating more increase rows.
