Emma Crochet Slouchy Hat Pattern

The Emma is a free crochet pattern for a slouchy style hat with stripes. This light weight yarn makes a great spring hat.

Learn how to crochet this slouchy hat with stripes. First we’ll create the ribbing for a perfect fit. You can choose different colors for dramatic stripes. Or make it easy in self striping yarn, or even crochet this slouchy crochet beanie in a solid color.

The texture of this crochet stitch is easy to make. I love how it looks with the slouchy fit. A simple combination of single crochets and double crochet stitches work to make a beautiful stitch pattern.

You can substitute any #3 lightweight yarn that’s comparable. I’ve made several of these slouchy beanie patterns in a variety of yarns and so many work out great.

Materials:

• 250 yd / 229 m City Tweed DK yarn* (55% Merino wool, 25% superfine alpaca, 20% Donegal tweed, 123 yd / 50 g); divide colors: Harbor Seal (1) 72 yd / 66 m, Primrose (1) 79 yd / 72 m, Snowbank (1) 99 yd / 91 m, or comparable #3 dk weight yarn.
• 4 mm hook (US Size G-4) for ribbing
• 5 mm hook (US Size H-8) for hat, or crochet hook needed to meet gauge
• yarn needle, scissors, measuring tape

• Ch 1 at the beginning does not count as a st.

Finished Dimensions

The ribbed band is 2” tall. The finished hat is 11″ in height and fits most teens and adults.

Construction

First the band is worked, using the single crochet in the back loop technique to create a stretchy ribbing. I have a tutorial on how to crochet brims if you need it. Then the band is sewn to form the circle.

Next, you’ll crochet around the top of the band to create the “tube” of the hat. This length is adjustable, if you want to add or subtract rounds. You’re working a simple stitch pattern of basic stitches so it’s an easy pattern.

To close up the top of the hat, there are decrease rounds. You’ll use the double crochet two together for decreases.

Fit / Adjustments

You can adjust the length of the ribbing to suit your needs. As written, this stretchy ribbing has 2″-3″ of negative ease. This means the ribbing is smaller than actual head circumference measurements. This band stretches to fit head circumferences of 21-23″ around.

To adjust the height of your ribbing, use any number of stitches. Just note that one chain will be a turning chain. Most hat ribbing will ned 1″ – 3″ of height.

For the pattern, you will crochet 88 sts around the band, you can add or subtract in 2s to make changes to this number.

Adjusting the height is easy, just crochet more or less rounds. If you are striping, then you may want to plan this ahead of time. Most adult slouchy hat heights will be 9″-11″ tall.
