Front Post Double Crochet Tutorial + Video
Front post double crochet stitches are double crochet stitches that are worked around the post of the stitch instead of into the top of the stitch.
In most patterns they are abbreviated as FPdc or FPDC or fpdc. This intermediate crochet technique creates a textured stitch that stands out among the others in your crochet projects.
I have often used front post double crochet stitches in waffle blankets and washcloths.

Materials
Any yarn and matching hook. I’m using a #4 medium worsted weight yarn and 5mm US size H/8 hook for this tutorial.
Stitches/Abbreviations
yo – yarn over
Ch 3 counts as a stitch, I highly recommend using a ch 3 alternative, here’s my favorite.
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
FPdc – front post double crochet (this tutorial)
Written Instructions
To crochet the front post double crochet, abbreviated here as fpdc, yo, insert your hook from the front to the back around the post of the next st, yo pulling the yarn across the post of the st and up on the front, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through 2 loops.
Practice Swatch
To crochet the front post double crochet (FPdc), you’ll need to start with a row of dc. To crochet a practice swatch follow the pattern below.
Row 1. Ch 12 and dc in the 3rd ch from your hook and in each ch across, turn.
From here you’ll be able to practice the FPdc using the written instructions above, or the photo tutorial below. Usually you start with a chain 3 (or dc alternative) to start the row.

Learn how to crochet the front post double crochet stitch. This versatile stitch can be used in ribbing, blankets, scarves and so much more.
Materials
- Any weight yarn, I’m using a #4 medium worsted weight yarn.
Tools
- A crochet hook to match your yarn, I'm using a 5mm US size H/8 hook for this tutorial.
Instructions
- First yarn over, as you would for a regular double crochet stitch.
- Insert your hook in between the posts of the stitch you are on and the stitch you will work your FPDC stitch into.
- Yarn over and pull the yarn behind and around the post and up. You will have 3 loops on your hook.
- Now you will complete a regular double crochet stitch. Yarn over and pull through two of the loops on your hook. You will be left with 2 loops on your hook.
- Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops on your hook.
