How To Front Post Double Crochet Photo Tutorial + Video
Front post double crochet stitches are worked around the post of the stitch instead of into the top of the stitch.
In most patterns they are abbreviated as FPdc or FPDC or fpdc. This intermediate crochet technique creates a textured stitch that stands out among the others in your crochet projects.

Materials
Any yarn and matching hook. I’m using a #4 medium worsted weight yarn and 5mm US size H/8 hook for this tutorial.
Stitches/Abbreviations
Ch 3 counts as a stitch, I highly recommend using a ch 3 alternative, here’s my favorite.
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
FPdc – front post double crochet (this tutorial)
rep – repeat
yo – yarn over
Written Instructions
To crochet the front post double crochet, abbreviated here as fpdc, yo, insert your hook from the front to the back around the post of the next st, yo pulling the yarn across the post of the st and up on the front, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through 2 loops.

Practice Swatch
To crochet the front post double crochet (FPdc), you’ll need to start with a row of dc. To crochet a practice swatch follow the pattern below.
Row 1. Ch 12 and dc in the 3rd ch from your hook and in each ch across, turn.
From here you’ll be able to practice the FPdc using the written instructions above, or the photo tutorial below. Usually you start with a chain 3 (or dc alternative) to start the row.

Front Post Double Crochet Tutorial + Video
Learn how to crochet the front post double crochet stitch.
Materials
- Any weight yarn, I’m using a #4 medium worsted weight yarn.
Tools
- A crochet hook to match your yarn, I'm using a 5mm US size H/8 hook for this tutorial.
Instructions
Row 1. Ch 12, dc in 3rd ch from your hook (skipped chs count as a st), dc in each ch across, turn. 
Row 2. Ch 3, this counts as a the first st, 
***
Step 1. Row 2 (cont). First yarn over, 
Step 2. Row 2 (cont). Insert your hook from the front of your work to the back, going behind the post of the stitch, 
Step 3. Row 2 (cont). Yarn over 
Step 4. Row 2 (cont). Pull the yarn behind the post and then up to the front. You will have 3 loops on your hook.
Step 5. Row 2 (cont). Now you will complete a regular double crochet stitch. Yarn over 
Step 6. Row 2 (cont). Pull through two of the loops on your hook. You will be left with 2 loops on your hook.
Step 7. Row 2 (cont). Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops on your hook.

Row 2 (cont).Rep steps 1 – 7 in next st, 
and in each st until 1 st left. 
Row 2 (cont). Dc in last st (top of ch of our skipped chs), turn. [11 sts] 
To continue working front post stitches.
Row 3. Ch 3, FPdc in each st across, turn. [11 sts]
Rep row 3 for length of project. For this sample I've worked 5 rows total.
