The Yarn
The best yarn to use for dishcloths is cotton yarn. You’ll want to use 100% cotton, or a cotton blend. Cotton yarn makes a good crochet dishcloth because it’s absorbent and machine washable.

For this pattern I’m using Dishie yarn. This is a #4 medium worsted weight yarn. You can substitute another cotton #4 yarn.

How to Make a Double Crochet Dishcloth
Learn how to crochet a simple dishcloth with double crochet stitches.
Materials
- 60 - 80 yd #4 medium worsted weight yarn, in cotton.
Tools
- 5 mm US size H-8 crochet hook
- yarn needle
- scissors
- measuring tape
Instructions
Gauge
- 1" / 2.5 cm x 1" / 2.5 cm = 3.5 dc x 2 rows of dc
Stitches / Abbreviations US Terms
- ch - chain stitch
dc - double crochet
sc - single crochet
sl st - slip stitch
st - stitch
Level
- Beginner
Pattern
- Ch 30 for an 8" width, Ch 37 for 10" width, Ch 44 for 12" width.
- Row 1. Dc in the 3rd ch from your hook, skipped chains are the turning chain and do not count as a st.
- Row 1 (cont.) Dc in each ch across, at the end of the row turn your work. (28, 35, 42 sts)
- Row 2. Ch 3, dc in next st and in each st across, turn. (28, 35, 42 sts)
- Rep Row 2 until dishcloth measures 8", 10", 12" tall, or continue the repeat row until you've reached your desired length.
Border
- Ch 1, turn and work along the edge.
- Sc evenly down the side until the next corner. Usually 2 sc per dc gives a straight edge.
- At the next corner place a (sc, ch 1, sc) all in the same stitch, turn and work along the next edge.
- Sc evenly down the side until the next corner, place a (sc, ch 1, sc) all in the same stitch, turn and work along the next edge.
- Repeat all the way around.
- At the last corner join the last stitch to the first stitch with a sl st.
