Learn how to knit an easy dishcloth with the garter stitch. This classic stitch is super easy for a beginner knitter and so relaxing for seasoned knitters.

I love a good garter stitch pattern. They’re so calming to knit. There’s no counting, just the soothing repetition of the knit stitch.

The garter stitch is a great way to practice your knitting because it’s just knit stitches on both sides. Reversible stitch patterns are awesome. There’s no wrong side to worry about.

There are 3 sizes for this simple dishcloth. This stitch works up flat. So new knitters can make these dishcloths without any edge treatment. It’s super simple.

This self striping yarns adds a nice variation to this quick project without having to join new yarn. The most important thing to know about yarn for a dish cloth is to use cotton. Check your yarn label for the fiber content.

Slip the first stitch of every row to keep your garter stitch edges nice and neat.

Knit dishcloths are easy projects to practice new stitches. And a simple pattern like this one is great for practicing your tension.

Materials

  • #4 medium worsted weight cotton yarn
  • US Size 7 / 4.5 mm knitting needles, or needle size to meet gauge. You can knit this pattern with straight needles. I use circular needles, this is my favorite set of interchangeable needles.*
  • Yarn needle, scissors, measuring tape

Stitches / Abbreviations

US Terms

co – cast on The long tail cast on is great for these little projects. Here are 4 easy cast ons for beginners to choose from.

bo – bind off

garter stitch – knit stitches on both sides used for the border here.

k – knit

rep – repeat

st(s) – stitch(es)

4″ / 10 cm x 4″ / 10 cm = 18 sts x 34 rows in pattern

Fit/Adjustments

To make this pattern wider or narrower cast on any number of stitches.

To change the length, continue to repeat rows until it’s to your desired length.

Materials

  • #4 medium worsted weight yarn, either 100% cotton yarn or cotton blend yarn is a great choice.

Tools

  • 4.5 mm needles (US Size 7) knitting needles
  • tapestry needle
  • scissors
  • measuring tape

Instructions

Cast On

  1. For a 6" dishcloth CO 28
  2. 8" CO 36
  3. 10" CO 44

Pattern

  1. Row 1. K each st to the end of the row. Turn your work.
  2. Row 2. Rep Row 1.
  3. Repeat Row 1 for the length.

Optional With a Slip 1

  1. For a neater edge you can slip the first stitch of each row, like this:
  2. Row 1. Sl 1, K all.
  3. Row 2. Rep Row 1.

  4. Repeat Row 1 for the length.

Finishing

  1. BO.
  2. Pull yarn through the last stitch.
  3. Cut yarn and weave in loose ends.
