Button On Kitchen Towel Topper Crochet Pattern in Modern Stripes
This crochet kitchen towel topper pattern is a free crochet pattern with photo tutorial. Learn how to add the crochet topper to your tea towels in the step by step tutorial.
Crochet the towel topper in contrasting colors for a striking effect. Crochet these toppers in cotton yarn to make them just as machine washable as your kitchen towels.
The crochet topper can be buttoned on so it can easily be removed for use and washing. I love how the crochet topper keeps kitchen towels in place, and not on the floor!

Years ago, my mom got one look at my KAMsnaps* and requested that I add them to her kitchen towels so they would stay put! I use them for cloth diapers and baby things, but they are so useful for so many crafty projects.
Anyway, this year I decided a few more kitchen towels with a crocheted touch were a good idea. I knew they would remind her of her grandmother, who was the crocheter in our family (before me!).
These kitchen towels with crochet topper make a quick gift. Or you can customize the towels and yarn to for your own kitchen.
My parents also recently had their kitchen upgraded to a more modern look. I wanted that same sophistication in a crochet dish towel topper. I think the stripes and color palette make this kitchen towel topper very modern.
Since these towel toppers only require a small amount of yarn, it’s a great scrap yarn project. Especially when you do stripes.
A traditional towel topper features a narrower flap to fold over. For this one, I chose to keep it rectangular which keeps the stripes bold. This unique free crochet towel topper pattern is a great quick project!

Materials
- #4 medium weight yarn pictured in I Love This Cotton Yarn (100% cotton, 180 yd/165m, 3.5oz/100g) colors: black 1 ball and white 1 ball.
- Crochet Hooks 2.75mm US size C to start your topper and 4mm US size G-4 to crochet it.
- Two 3/4″ buttons
- Kitchen Hand Towels, choose neutral towels or cute dishtowels that are colorful and then coordinate your yarn.
- An Awl to punch holes
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- Pins
- Scissors
Pattern Notes:
- The crochet topper uses the Griddle Stitch, which is worked in pairs-just a dc, sc. Be sure to start with an even number of stitches.
- Ch 2 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch, which means your first dc will be in the same stitch as the ch 2.
- Gauge is not terribly important for this project, but mine was 4 stitches (dc,sc, dc,sc) = 1 inch.
- The white towel pictured is worked in opposite stripes. It’s also only 3 rows of each color so it takes on a more curved shape when buttoned.

These crochet kitchen towel toppers make great last minute gifts! Learn how to add a crochet topper to a kitchen towel in this step by step tutorial.
Materials
- #4 medium worsted weight yarn pictured in I Love This Cotton Yarn (100% cotton, 180 yd/165m, 3.5oz/100g) colors: black 1 ball and white 1 ball.
- Two 3/4" buttons
- Kitchen Hand Towels
Tools
- Crochet Hooks 2.75mm US size C to start your topper and 4mm US size G-4 to crochet it.
- An Awl to punch holes
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Pins
- Scissors
Instructions
- Prep your towels:
Start by tri-folding your towel lengthwise and then folding it in half, as you would to hang it on the oven handle. - Now it's time to measure and mark where your stitches will go in the top of the towel. I marked mine about 1/2" down from the top of the fold and every 1/4" across the towel. Since we'll be using a small crochet hook to get this started I wanted them fairly close to one another. Most importantly, be sure to mark an even number of stitches for the pattern.
- Before actually punching any holes, I used my T-pins to secure all the layers of the towel together. You want to be sure to keep them straight and that you catch all the layers.
- Insert your awl and punch your first hole. I started about 1/4" from the edge. I also punched the holes as I went.
- Insert your small hook and work it around a bit to get the hole open enough to accommodate the yarn.
- Attach the yarn with a slip stitch to the towel.
- The Pattern:
Row 1: Single crochet across at your marked points, poking holes with the awl as you go. I made 22 sc, if you need more or less stitches, just be sure it's an even number of stitches, turn. - Switch to the larger size G hook for the rest of the pattern.
Row 2: Ch 1 (doesn’t count), sc across, turn. (22 sts) - Row 3: Ch 2, dc in same st, sc in next,
- Row 3 cont. *(dc in next, sc in next), rep from * until end of row, turn.
Here's a few pictures of the end of the row: - Row 4: Ch 2, dc in same st, sc in next, *(dc in next, sc in next), rep from * until end of row. On last st, change to black, turn.
- Rows 5-8: Rep Row 4, change to white.
- Rows 9-12: Rep Row 4, change to black.
- Rows 13-16: RepRow 4, change to white.
- Row 17: Ch 2, dc in same st, sc in next, *(dc in next, sc in next) rep from * until end, turn.
- Button Hole Row
This button hole works well for 3/4" buttons, check yours and adjust accordingly-you can chain more or less, if you need to accommodate a different size button. - Row 18: Ch 2, dc in same st, sc in next, dc, ch.1, sk next st, dc in next st, sc in next st,
- Row 18 cont. *(dc in next, sc in next) rep from * until st number 18 (or 5th from the end),
- Row 18 cont. Sc in next, ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in next, dc in next, sc in last st, turn.
- Row 19: Rep Row 4. Crochet into ch spaces as you come to them.
- Row 20: Repeat Row 4.
- Row 21: Ch. 1, sc across.
- Cut yarn and weave in ends.
- To Finish Your Towel:
Fold the crochet topper in half, positioning it as if it were attached to and hanging from the oven. You might want to actually fit it over the oven bar to get it just right. You can see on mine, three of the striped sections will be folded to the front, and two sections left on the back. So your fold won't be halfway, it’s a little over half.
Use your T-pins to mark where your buttons will go. Sew on buttons with your hand needle and thread.
Button your topper around the oven handle and all done!
