Helen of Sunflower Cottage Crochet is coordinating another beautiful blanket crochet along! This year the theme is floral.

All the participating designers are contributing a variety of crochet squares with a flower theme. I love seeing how each square motif reflects the creativity of the designer.

Isn’t it amazing how many different ways you can crochet flowers on a blanket square?! It’s a beautiful pattern in these colorful squares!

I love all the floral granny squares!

If you’ve only every crocheted a daisy granny square you’ll get to a create a variety of crochet granny squares in this CAL! There are 20 blanket squares so you can make a nice throw size blanket.

Easy square measures 10″ x 10″ so arranging the squares in a 4 x 5 pattern gives you roughly 40″ x 50″ blanket. And if you miss some squares you can arrange them in 4 X 4 for a square blanket, which makes a nice baby blanket size.

If you missed some crochet patterns, or don’t want to miss the next squares, you can get all the square patterns in one bundle now!

Papavero means poppy in Italian.

One thing I love about these blanket crochet projects is that you get the satisfaction of crocheting up one piece quickly! And you get to join them all up into a larger project when you’re done.

At least to me, if feels less overwhelming when I get those small wins over time!

If you can’t do the blanket crochet along right now, I think the Papavero flower granny square will make a nice cushion cover. It’s easy to just increase your square size for a bigger one too.

Gauge

2”/5cm x 2”/5cm = 8 dc x 5 rnds of dc

Rnds 1-2 = 2”/5cm across

Construction

The square is worked in the round. You will join each round with a slip stitch and continue working in the same direction.

From Rnd 3 and on, increases are made at 4 corner points in the chain space.

You will alternate increasing with (dc, ch 1, dc) in one round and (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in the next round.

Once the granny square is complete, you’ll join to the center with a chain stitch to add the poppy. I include a step by step tutorial on how to add the flower center. Since this is the last step it’s at the bottom of the free crochet pattern below.

Adjustments

If you have trouble meeting gauge, then it’s easy to just leave off or add on a round of the repeat to achieve the desired size.

To make the center of the flower smaller or larger, change colors before or after the pattern indicates.

Likewise, to make the flower petal portion larger or smaller, change colors before or after the pattern indicates. Then subtract or add a round of the surface crochet pattern.
