Once this scarf pattern came together I really thought it resembles a path. With the contrasting lines, it’s very directional.
This line of though eventually led me to name it the Verso Scarf. In Italian, Verso means towards. I think that’s a perfect name for this crochet scarf. And definitely a perfect sentiment as we welcome a new year.
Hopefully, we have a year filled with a healthy future ahead. And, well, if not, we have crochet to help us.
The Verso Scarf has a matching hat now. Be sure to crochet the Verso Beanie to go with your scarf.

The Yarn for this Scarf Pattern
Thanks to Furls for providing the yarn for this pattern!
Furls Whims Merino is yarn made especially for crocheters. This gorgeous z-twist yarn works with you, not against you.
What does this really mean for crocheters? That your yarn won’t untwist as you crochet it.Whims Merino retains it’s shape, which gives your stitches excellent definition. They really pop!
This worsted weight yarn crochets up easily and beautifully. The merino wool is superwash and has a bit of nylon too. This makes for an extremely wearable scarf.
Wash and wear are my favorite items to make and gift! But Whims Merino doesn’t sacrifice quality for usability. This yarn features amazing drape and stitch definition.
Plus, Furls has added new colors that have me dreaming of Spring already! Have you tried Whims Merino* yarn yet?
You may also like the Berryessa a light and lacy crochet scarf pattern. The Lia is one skein lightweight cowl crochet pattern. Both of these beauties feature Whims Merino yarn.
About the Crochet Stitches in this textured scarf
The Verso Men’s Scarf features a combination of simple stitches. Rows of double crochet contrast with single rows of texture.
To achieve this texture you’ll double crochet and then slip stitch. This slip stitch brings the height of the dc down, creating that popping texture.
Adding to it’s charm, the darker stripes help to accentuate the texture rows. I love how the light grey really lets the stitch definition of this yarn shine.
I use a similar technique in the Autumn Crunch Hat a bottom up textured crochet hat pattern in all sizes. This texture is made with half double crochets though.

- Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
- Stitch multiple is 2 + 1, plus 2 if using a chain start and not a foundation chain.
- Color changing tip: before the last movement of last stitch before color change, drop the first color and pick up the second color, finishing the stitch in the new color. You can check out my crochet color changing tips for more info.

Scarf Construction
You will crochet this scarf on the long edge. This means Row 1 will determine the length of your scarf. The number of rows you work will determine the width.
Fit/Adjustment
To crochet a different length scarf, adjust the number of stitches you begin with using the stitch multiple from the Notes.
To make your scarf longer, crochet as many rows as needed. There are center stripes, so I recommend crocheting more rows before and after these to maintain symmetry.
Remember when adjusting that changes will also effect the amount of yarn needed so plan accordingly.
