Verso Beanie a Free Crochet Hat Pattern
The Verso Beanie crochet pattern features texture and stripes. This top down beanie pattern is available in sizes from baby to adult.
This hat matches the Verso Scarf which features the same gorgeous texture and contrasting stripes. Now you can crochet both the hat and scarf for a complete set.
This pattern makes a great hat for men. I love the contrasting stripes, but the texture works well in a solid color too.
Like all stripes, these are adjustable. I played around with mine a few ways and like both types of striping.

Yarn
Furls Whims Merino is yarn made especially for crocheters. This gorgeous z-twist yarn works with you, not against you.
What does this really mean for crocheters? That your yarn won’t untwist as you crochet it.
Whims Merino retains it’s shape, which gives your stitches excellent definition. They really pop!
This worsted weight yarn crochets up easily and beautifully.
The merino wool is superwash and has a bit of nylon too. This makes for an extremely wearable hat.
Wash and wear are my favorite items to make and gift! But Whims Merino doesn’t sacrifice quality for usability.
This yarn features beautiful stitch definition. Plus, Furls has added new colors that have me dreaming of Spring already.
Have you tried Whims Merino yarn yet?

Stitch
The Verso Beanie features a combination of simple stitches. Rounds of double crochet contrast with rows of texture.
To achieve this texture you’ll double crochet and then slip stitch. This slip stitch brings the height of the dc down, creating that popping texture.

You can see it fits nice and snug. He loves orange-peep his shirt.
Just to give you and idea of how the gauge differs from the merino wool hat to this acrylic yarn hat, I went up half a hook size for this one.
Of course, it will be different for everyone and every yarn!

Be sure to make the matching Verso Scarf so you can complete the set.
The Lia Cowl is an easy crochet pattern that features this yarn and beautiful lace design.
And if a scarf is more your style you might enjoy the Berryessa Scarf which makes a beautiful warm weather accessory.
Materials
- #4 medium weight yarn, pictured in Furls Whims Merino light grey
- Rec yarn by size:
- Baby (MC) ~80 yds/73m and (CC) ~55 yds/50m
- Toddler (MC) ~100 yds/91m and (CC) ~65 yds/59m
- Child (MC) ~100 yds/91m and (CC) ~75 yds/69m
- Teen/Sm Adult (MC) ~120 yds/109m and (CC) ~85 yds/77m
- M/L Adult (MC) ~120 yds/109m and (CC) ~93 yds/85m
- 5mm crochet hook, or hook needed to meet gauge; optionally you may use a half hook size smaller for a snugger fitting ribbing.
- yarn needle, scissors, measuring tape
Notes
- Ch 3 counts as a stitch, I highly recommend using a ch 3 alternative, here’s my favorite.
- The slip stitch to join each round does not count as a st.
- When working the (dc, sl st) rounds {Rnd 7 for baby and Rnd 6 for all other sizes} the last sl st of the round can be hard to see, you may consider using a stitch marker to help.
- Usually when working in the round you are looking at the right side of your work and you need to turn it right side out. However with this pattern the texture of the (dc, sl st) pops on the outside so this will be your “right side” of the hat. No need to flip it inside out.
- Stitch multiple is 2.

Gauge
4”/10cm x 4”/10cm = 15 dc x 11 rows in the pattern, with 5mm hook, after blocking
I used a merino wool which relaxes a lot in blocking. Please check your gauge for best fit.
Check out my tutorial on how to block your crochet hats for more details on this technique.

Construction
This beanie is worked top down. It is crocheted in the round, which means each round is joined and then you continue in the same direction.
Fit/Adjustment
Negative Ease = 2”/5cm where hat ribbing is intentionally 2”/5cm smaller than head circumference and stretches to fit.
To fit age (head circumference): baby 6-12 mos (16”/40.6cm) toddler (18”/45.7cm), child (20”/50.8cm), teen/sm adult (21”/53.3cm), med/lg adult (22”/56cm)
