Free Birthday Cupcake Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

Learn how to crochet an easy cupcake with the free pattern. This little cupcake is so fun to make! Plus it’s a great gift for any special occasion.

My most yarn loving child has a summer birthday so I struggle to find things to make for him. But this cute cupcake was a hit.

I love that it’s a quick make and uses very little yarn. Read on for the free crochet cupcake pattern.

Materials

  • 50 yd #4 medium weight yarn divided in brown (25 yd), blue (16 yd), white (5 yd), yellow (2 yd) and scraps of yarn in different colors for sprinkles: pink (1 yd), orange (1 yd). I use the different yarns in my stash: Red Heart Super Saver, Caron Simply Soft*, etc.
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook, or hook size you’re most comfortable crocheting with #4 yarn for amigurumi.
  • Polyfill for stuffing.
  • Two 20 mm safety eyes.
  • 10 black crochet thread.

Gauge

Rnds 1 – 2 = 1″ across. Gauge is not terribly important for this pattern. However you do want small, tight stitches for amigurumi so use the smallest hook that you can comfortably with your yarn.

Notes

This pattern is worked in continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round. Move the stitch marker up each round.

After changing colors slip stitch the round together and then work continuously again.

Materials

Instructions

Cupcake Bottom

  1. In brown yarn
  2. Start with a mc.
  3. Rnd 1. Place 6 sc in circle, do not join. Mark first sc with a stitch marker and continue working in the same direction. (6 sts)
  4. Rnd 2. Place 2 sc in each stitch around. (12 sts) Remember to move stitch marker up to first stitch on each round.
  5. Rnd 3. Place 1 sc in first st, place 2 sc in next stitch, *(1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) rep * around. (18 sts)
  6. Rnd 4. Place 1 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st *(1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st) rep * around. (24 sts)
  7. Rnd 5. Place 1 sc in first st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st *(1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st) rep * around. (30 sts)
  8. Rnd 6. Sc in each st around. (30 sts)
  9. Rnds 7 - 11. Repeat round 6 until the bottom of the cupcake reaches 2" tall.
  10. Cut yarn.
  11. Face: Add safety eyes 3 sts apart. You can also crochet small eyes with black yarn and 6 sc in mc. Or embroider on eyes with black thread.
  12. Embroider mouth with crochet thread.
  13. Stuff. Set aside.

Cupcake Top

The frosting top is worked separately from the top down and then sewn to the bottom.

  1. In blue yarn (or desired frosting color)
  2. Start with a mc.
  3. Rnd 1. Place 6 sc in circle, do not join. Mark first stitch with a stitch marker and continue working in the same direction. (6 sts)
  4. Rnd 2. Place 2 sc in each stitch around. (12 sts) Remember to move stitch marker up to first st on each round.
  5. Rnd 3. Place 1 sc in first st, place 2 sc in next st, *(1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) rep * around. (18 sts)
  6. Rnd 4. Sc in each st around. (18 sts)
  7. Rnd 5. Place 1 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st *(1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st) rep * around. (24 sts)
  8. Rnd 6. Place 1 sc in first st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st *(1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st) rep * around. (30 sts)
  9. Rnd 7. Sc in each st around. (30 sts) Do not cut yarn. Pull up a long loop. We will continue from here to join the frosting top to the cupcake bottom later.

Sprinkles

Use your yarn needle and different colors to embroider on sprinkles to the top of the frosting. If you do not pull the stitch too tight you can carry a single color on the inside without cutting it.

Candle

  1. Join white yarn to center top in any st on round 1 on top of the cupcake frosting.
  2. Rnd 1. Sc 6 around working into the sts from round 1 of the frosting. Join this round with a sl st. (6 sts)
  3. Rnd 2. Inv dec, mark as first st and work continuously, sc 4 around. (5 sts) Move sm up each round.
  4. Rnds 3 - 7. Sc 5. (5 sts) Stuff a little as you go. Use your yarn needle to push it in there.
  5. Join last st with sl st and cut yarn.
  6. Join Yellow yarn to any st.
  7. Sc 5. (5 sts)
  8. Inv dec, leave the rest of the sts unworked. (2 sts)
  9. Pull up a long loop and cut yarn.
  10. Pull tail through the last stitch.
  11. Weave in yellow end down through flame, make sure not to pull too hard. Keep the flame end pointy.

Finishing

  1. Joining round. Continue from long loop on last st of frosting top. Match up frosting top and cupcake bottom. Start in the back. With blue yarn sc in st of bottom, joining the frosting top to the cupcake bottom. Sc in each st around, stuffing as you go. (24 sts)
  2. *(Ch 2, sk 1 st, sc in next st) rep around, join to 2nd ch, leave a long tail, cut yarn and pull tail through last stitch.
  3. Weave in ends.
