Materials

  • 10-15 yds super bulky (6) yarn, I’m using Lion Brand’s WET&Q

Tools

  • crochet hook 7mm size L
  • T-pins
  • yarn needle
  • scissors

Instructions

Start with a MC, or ch 5 and sl st to the first ch to form a circle.

  1. Place 9 dc into the mc, sl st to top of 1st dc to join. (9 sts)
  2. Ch 3, 2 tr into the first st, 2 dc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, 2 sc in next st, 1 dc in next st (this will be your tip), 2 sc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, 2 dc in next st and 2 tr in last st, ch 2 and sl st to 1st st of Rnd 1 (this forms the indent at the top of the heart).

Finishing

  1. Leave a long tail to sew your applique on to a hat, blanket or other accessory.
  2. To sew on to a hat or scarf: Thread your yarn needle with the long tail you left.
  3. Position your heart. I placed mine on the right side of the hat. T-pins are more useful than regular pins for positioning crochet applique or amigurumi pieces, but regular pins work too!
  4. Weave your needle through the stitches of the hat, but only catch the top strands of the yarn stitches-don’t go around the whole stitch.
  5. Bring your needle back up through the applique. Work it under the top two loops-exactly where you would put your crochet hook.
  6. Continue sewing the applique down, weave in and out evenly, shaping as you go. Check and adjust as you sew, it’s easier to unthread and reposition now, if needed.
  7. Finish off: cut yarn and weave tail in. Appliques are nice because you can weave it under the heart. If done correctly, you won’t see your stitches on the underside of your applique. Not that it matters so much on a hat, but if you applique on to blankets or scarves you might not want to see the stitches!
