Sharing is caring!

Learn how to single crochet two stitches together in this step by step tutorial. This post includes a photo tutorial and video for how to decrease two stitches into one.

The written instruction include still photos, plus there’s a video tutorial demonstrating how to do this stitch.

These sc decreases can be made flat or when working in the round. For this tutorial I am working flat.

Single crochet two together is a crochet technique that is used to decrease the number of stitches. It commonly abbreviates as sc2tog in written crochet patterns.

Single crochet decrease is another wording I’ve seen for this stitch. For this photo tutorial I use a swatch of sc stitches, but you can do this decrease with any pattern.

We often use this technique for decreasing a hat, when working in the round, like in the Lontano Beanie.

If you’re crocheting flat then you may use single crochet decreases for shaping, like in the Christmas Lightbulb pattern.

Sometimes, if you are crocheting a project like amigurumi, it may be a good idea to use an invisible decrease, like I did in the Katerina Cat Lovey pattern.

  • Any weight yarn, I'm using Wool Ease Thick & Quick, a # 6 super bulky yarn.

  • Hook compatible with your yarn, I'm using an 8mm Streamline.

  1. Insert hook into first stitch.
  2. Yarn over and pull up a loop, you'll have 2 loops on your hook.
  3. Insert hook into the next st.
  4. Yarn over and pull up a loop, you'll have 3 loops on your hook. 3 loops on hook.
  5. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook. 1 sc2tog complete.
  6. This completes the sc2tog. You can use this stitch for shaping the sides of your work, as in this picture. White swatch with single crochet decreases on both sides.
