How to Crochet a Cross in Bobbles Pocket Prayer Cloth

Learn how to crochet a cross using the bobble stitch. This pocket prayer cloth makes a great gift for anyone.

This small crochet rectangle is perfect for placing in your pocket. The crochet cross is made in bobble stitch.

This pocket prayer cloth is the next crochet pattern in my Crochet for Cancer series. When you or a loved one are going through cancer treatments this crochet cross is a reminder of His love.

I love the bobble stitch. It’s perfect for creating the cross effect.  For this sample I use two contrasting colors to make the cross pop.

I hope you can crochet a few of these prayer cloths and gift them to someone who would benefit from it.

Materials

My favorite Hooks are Furls* and Clover*!

1” 2.5 cm x 1”/ 2.5 cm = 3.5 sc x 4 rows

Size

Finished prayer cloth measures 5.75” / 14.5 cm x 4.5” / 11.5 cm.

Stitches/Abbreviations (US Terms)

ch (s) – chain (s)

rep – repeat

RS – right side  

sc – single crochet

sl st – slip stitch

st (s) – stitch (es)

WS – wrong side

Special Stitches

Bobble: yarn over & insert hook into stitch to be worked, *{yarn over & pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook)}, repeat from * 4 more times (loops on hook will increase 1 each time, end with 6 loops on hook), yarn over & pull through all 6 loops on hook, chain 1 to secure bobble.

Notes

  1. Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  2. When changing colors, finish the stitch before with the new color. Crochet over the old color and pick it up again when needed. See my post on color changing tips for more details.

A free crochet pattern for a pocket size prayer cloth featuring a crochet cross in bobbles.

Materials

  • Two contrasting colors of #4 medium worsted weight yarn. I chose I Love This Yarn in Mid Green (Color B) and I Love This Yarn in Purple (Color A).

Tools

  • 5mm (H) hook
  • yarn needle
  • scissors

Instructions

In Color A Ch 14.

  1. Row 1: SC into 2nd chain from hook and each chain across, ch 1, turn. (13)
  2. Row 2: SC across, ch 1, turn. (13)
  3. Row 3: SC in first 6 stitches, change to Color B, Bobble stitch in next stitch, change to Color A, SC in next 6 stitches, ch 1, turn. (13)
  4. Row 4: SC across, ch 1, turn (13)
  5. Row 5: SC in first 6 stitches, change to Color B, Bobble stitch in next stitch, change to Color A, SC in next 6 stitches, ch 1, turn. (13)
  6. Row 6: SC across, ch 1, turn. (13)
  7. Row 7: SC in first 6 stitches, change to Color B, Bobble stitch in next stitch, change to Color A, SC in next 6 stitches, ch 1, turn. (13)
  8. Row 8: SC across, ch 1, turn. (13)
  9. Row 9: SC in first 2 stitches, change to Color B, *{Bobble, SC} repeat from * 4 X, Bobble, change to Color A SC 2, ch 1, turn. (13)
  10. Row 10: SC across, ch 1, turn. (13)
  11. Row 11: SC in first 6 stitches, change to Color B, Bobble stitch in next stitch, change to Color A, SC in next 6 stitches, ch 1, turn. (13)
  12. Row 12: SC across, ch 1, turn. (13)
  13. Row 13: SC in first 6 stitches, change to Color B, Bobble stitch in next stitch, change to Color A, SC in next 6 stitches, ch 1, turn. (13)
  14. Row 14: SC across, ch 1, turn. (13)
  15. Row 15: SC in first 6 stitches, change to Color B, Bobble stitch in next stitch, change to Color A, SC in next 6 stitches, ch 1, turn. (13)
  16. Row 16: SC across, ch 1, turn. (13)
  17. Row 17: SC in first 6 stitches, change to Color B, Bobble stitch in next stitch, change to Color A, SC in next 6 stitches, ch 1, turn. (13)
  18. Row 18: SC across, ch 1, turn. (13)
  19. Row 19: SC across, ch 1, turn. (13)

Border:

  1. In the first corner: *{SC, ch1, SC},
  2. Continue to SC around, crocheting one SC in each row.
  3. Repeat * for each corner.
  4. Join with a slip stitch to the first SC and fasten off.
  5. Weave in ends.
