Chunky Crochet Beanie Pattern in 10 Sizes
This chunky crochet beanie is a simple half double crochet hat. It crochets up quick in superbulky yarn.
This is a great basic hat that’s easy to customize to your team’s colors, or a holiday.
The free crochet hat pattern includes sizes for babies from 0-3 mos through children, teen and adults. Everyone in the fam can keep warm with this cozy beanie.

These chunky beanies are great for a basic hat. You can jazz them up with a chunky heart or little bear ears to up the cuteness factor.
Yarn
For this beanie pattern I used Lion Brand’s Hometown USA. This is an affordable, superbulky #6 weight yarn that comes in a variety of colors.
This burnt red color is Tampa Spice. The trim is Wool Ease Thick and Quick in fisherman.
Can you use a different yarn? Sure, most #6 superbulky yarns are suitable to this basic beanie pattern.
Stitch
This chunky crochet beanie consists of half double crochet stitches. So it’s an easy peasy, beginner friendly hat pattern.
For the trim I use the single crochet stitch in a different color for a nice contrast.
Materials
- 40yds/37m-81yds/74m super bulky yarn (#6) I used Lion Brand Hometown USA yarn in Tampa Spice.
Notes
- Ch 1 at the beginning of the round does not count as a stitch.
- Join tightly with a slip stitch to keep the join “seamless.”

A chunky half double crochet beanie pattern in sizes for the family.
Materials
- 40yds/37m-81yds/74m super bulky yarn (#6) I used Lion Brand Hometown USA yarn in Tampa Spice.
Tools
- 9mm (M) hook, or hook needed to meet gauge
- Yarn needle
- Measuring tape

Instructions
NB-2 weeks
- Start with a mc. 8 hdc into the mc, join last st to first with a sl st. (8)
- Ch 1, 2 hdc in the same stitch and in each stitch around, join with a sl st. (16)
- Ch 1, hdc in the same stitch, 2 hdc in the next, *{hdc in the next stitch, 2 hdc in the next} rep from * around, join with a sl st. (24)
- Ch 1, hdc in the same stitch and in each stitch around, sl st to join. (24)
- Repeat round 4.
- Repeat round 4.
- Join new color with a slip stitch. Ch 1, sc in the same stitch and in each stitch around, sl st to join. (24)
- Cut yarn and weave in tail.

Start with a mc.
1. 8 hdc into the mc, join last st to first with a sl st. (8)
2. Ch 1, 2 hdc in the same stitch and in each stitch around, join with a sl st. (16)
