Bienno Scarf with Pockets Knitting Pattern Easy Fold Up Ends!
The Bienno is a cozy scarf with pockets knitting pattern. This easy knitting pattern uses simple stitches and techniques for a relaxing knit.
This knit pattern is beginner friendly and free here on the blog. The scarf features basketweave pockets, and a ribbing stitch that is uber cuddly.
The super bulky yarn means this scarf knits up quick! I think the Bienno would make a lovely gift this season.

The Yarn
For this pocket scarf I use #6 super bulky yarn. The scarf in the picture is knit with Paintbox Simply Chunky in the yummy soft fudge color.
You can substitute another #6 super bulky yarn. I highly recommend Lion Brand Yarn Wool Ease Thick & Quick. It has a touch of wool for warmth!

Free Knitting Patterns

Materials
- Paintbox Simply Super Chunky Yarn* a #6 super bulky weight yarn (100% acrylic, 3.5 oz. / 100 g, 65 yd. / 60 m) color: soft fudge; 5 balls; or 325 yd / 297 m comparable yarn. I used all of 4 balls, so I’m suggesting at least 5. You may even want get 1-2 more balls if you need a longer length.
- 8mm US size 11 knitting needles, or needles needed to meet gauge.
- yarn needle, measuring tape, scissors, pins
Notes
- Please read through all notes and pattern before you begin.
- Work up a gauge swatch using the provided gauge information. And if your gauge matches great, continue on. If not, change your needle size and swatch again. If your stitches are smaller, go up a needle size, if they’re larger, go down a needle size.
- Stitch multiple is 4 + 3.

Gauge
4”/10cm x 4”/10cm = 9.5 sts x 16 rows in basket weave pattern, unblocked
Construction
This scarf pattern is knit flat. You’ll begin with a section of the basketweave stitch and then knit the main scarf in uneven rib. Please note the ribbed section is narrow due to it’s stretchy nature. You’ll then finish with another section of basketweave. These you will fold over and seam to make the pockets.
Finished Dimensions
60”/ 152.4 cm long x 5”/ 12.7 cm wide
Measurements taken after pockets are seamed up; ribbing is unstretched, and unblocked.
Fit/Adjustments
*Remember to add more yarn if you make changes.
To adjust the width of your scarf (and pockets) add or subtract in 4s to my start number.
To change the length, adjust the number of rows of the main ribbing section.
You can also make the pockets taller or shorter by repeating or leaving off a 4 row repeat.

Bienno Scarf with Pockets Knitting Pattern
Free knitting pattern for an easy scarf with pockets. This simple scarf is knit flat and folded to sew the pockets.
Materials
- Paintbox Simply Super Chunky Yarn a #6 super bulky weight yarn (100% acrylic, 3.5 oz. / 100 g, 65 yd. / 60 m) color: soft fudge; 4 balls; or 260 yd / 240 m comparable yarn.
Tools
- 8mm US size 11 knitting needles, or needles needed to meet gauge.

Instructions
- Pocket End
(8”/20.3cm x 8”/20.3cm)
CO 19
Row 1. (RS) K - Row 2. *K3, P1 rep * until 3 sts left, K3.
- Row 3. K
- Row 4. K1, *P1, K3 rep * until 2 sts left, P1, K1.
- Rep these 4 rows 7 more times = 8”/20.3cm, or to desired pocket height.
Main Section - Row 33. *K2, P2 rep * until 3 sts left, K2, P1.
- Rep this row for 60”/152.4 cm or to desired scarf length.
Second Pocket End
On next RS row - Rep rows 1-4 8 times total = 8”/20.3cm, or to desired pocket height.
- BO. Cut yarn, leave a long tail for seaming.
Finishing - Fold RS of basketweave section up. Use tail, or length of yarn and yarn needle to sew up sides.
- Sew both sides to form the pocket, leave top open You’ll have to stretch the ribbing to fit on the second side. You can use pins to secure it, t-pins work well on super bulky yarn.
- Sew both sides to form the pocket, leave top open.
- Turn right side out. Rep on other end of scarf.
- Cut yarn and weave in ends.
