Free Single Crochet Hat Pattern An Easy Beanie For Beginners

Sharing is caring!

A single crochet beanie pattern is a great hat to make for quick gifts. These little beanies are easy to customize for friends and loved ones.

I love a basic beanie for a baby shower go to gift! Crochet this hat in different colors to match baby’s nursery or neutrals. Or top it off with a faux fur pom pom for a touch of luxury.

The free crochet pattern includes different sizes to fit everyone. Since this hat is made in the single crochet stitch it’s an easy project.

Hats are an easy crochet project and use very little yarn. Many crocheters enjoy crocheting hats all year! You can choose to gift them or donate them to their favorite charity.

This little crochet bonnet is a fun hat to make in bulky yarn with simple stitches.

The Lunette Sun Hat is a great single crochet hat with brim for summer.

Yarn

You can make this hat in any #4 medium worsted weight yarn. For the sample, I use one of my favorite yarns, Heartland.

Use a wool yarn or wool blend you will have a nice warm beanie to gift! Or use cotton yarn for warmer weather. This is a good idea for summer chemo caps.

Stitches and Abbreviations in US Terms

Here are the basic stitches and abbreviations I use in this hat pattern. Click on any link below for an in depth, step by step tutorial on the crochet stitch.

ch (s) – chain(s)

mc – magic circle (magic ring)

rep – repeat

rnd – round

sc (s) – single crochet stitches

sl st (s) – slip stitches

st (s) – stitch(es)

Notes

  1. If you are unfamiliar with the magic circle, you can ch 3 and join to the first ch with a sl st.
  2. This hat pattern is worked top down, in the round. You will increase in a circle and then work the body of the hat.
  3. The hat is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join. Mark the first st with a stitch marker. Move the stitch marker up to the first st of each round.

Gauge

Gauge is how your hat will turn out the same size as the pattern’s (and fit!). If you need help on how to measure gauge start with this tutorial.

For a top down hat that’s worked in the round I like to provide the gauge in the round.

Rnds 1 – 3 = 1.5” across

Rnds 1 – 10 = 4” across

Fit

To get the correct size beanie, I include a suggested age for each size that is paired with the head circumference. So if you’re able to measure the head circumference you can use that against these numbers below.

To fit age (head circumference):

  • baby 0-3 mos (14”/ 35.5 cm)
  • baby 3-6 mos (15”/3 8 cm)
  • baby 6-12 mos (16”/ 40.5 cm)
  • toddler (18”/ 45.5 cm)
  • preschool (19” / 48.5 cm)
  • child (20”/ 51 cm)
  • teen( 21”/ 53.5 cm)
  • sm adult  (22” / 56 cm)
  • med adult (23”/ 58.5 cm)
  • lg adult (24”/ 61 cm)

Adjustments

To make a slouchy beanie you can crochet repeat more regular rounds to make your hat 1” – 3” taller. This will give you the slouchy effect.

You can add a pom pom for a little flair. I love using my Clover pom pom maker*, but there are ways to make poms without one too.

Adding stripes to a simple stitch pattern is a fun way to customize your basic hat.
