A good hdc beanie pattern is an essential for crocheters. Jazzing up a simple beanie is the easiest way to personalize it for any family member or friend.

You can add stripes in a different color, or appliqués like a heart and adding a pom to the top of the beanie are a lot of fun.

The Autumn Crunch is a slightly slouchy textured hat topped with a faux fur pom pom for that touch of luxury. If you want to add a yarn pom pom start with a long tail so you can sew it on afterwards.

This simply slouchy beanie uses all double crochet stitches and makes a great gift for men.

The Yarn

The yarn for this hat is one of my favorite yarns. Heartland is silky soft and brings dimension to solid colors.

This 100% acrylic yarn is great for hats that work on kids, cancer patients and anyone who love a warm winter hat.

You can substitute other yarns if needed. Be sure to use a #4 medium weight yarn. There are many popular brands like Red Heart, WeCrochet and Lion Brand.

Even the adult sizes only use one skein of yarn. Detailed yarn information is below.

Materials

  • #4 medium worsted weight yarn pictured in Lion Brand Heartland* (100% acrylic, 251 yd / 230 m, 5 oz, 142 g) color: Acadia, (1) ball. See recommended yarn by size below.
  • 5mm US Size H-8 crochet hook,* or hook size needed to meet gauge.
  • yarn needle
  • scissors
  • measuring tape

Estimated yarn needed by size:

  • Baby 0-3 mos ~75 yds / 68 m
  • Baby 3-6 mos ~80 yds/ 73 m
  • Baby 6-12 mos ~85 yds / 78 m
  • Toddler ~90 yds / 83 m
  • Preschool ~93 yds / 85 m
  • Child ~95 yds / 87 m
  • Teen/Sm Adult ~100 yds / 91 m
  • M/L Adult ~105 yds / 96 m

Stitches and Abbreviations in US Terms

Here are the stitches and abbreviations I use in this hat pattern. Click on any link below for an in depth, step by step tutorial on the crochet stitch.

ch (s) – chain(s)

hdc (s) – half double crochet

mc – magic circle (magic ring)

rep – repeat

rnd – round

sc (s) – single crochet stitches

sl st (s) – slip stitches

st (s) – stitch (es)

Notes

Ch 1 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch. I prefer only one chain to start to keep my join looking seamless.

Gauge

4” / 10 cm x 4” / 10 cm = 14 hdc x 12 rnds

Gauge is how your hat will turn out the same size as the pattern’s (and fit!). If you need help on how to measure gauge start with this tutorial.

For a top down hat that’s worked in the round I like to provide the gauge in the round.

Rnds 1 – 3 = 2.5” / 5 cm across.

Rnds 1 – 5 = 4” / 10 cm across.

Construction

This half double crochet beanie uses basic stitches. You work it from the top of the hat down, in the round.

This means you will join the last stitch of each round to the first stitch. Then you continue working in a circle. Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round to help you keep track.

To get the correct size beanie, I include a suggested age for each size that is paired with the head circumference. So if you’re able to measure the head circumference you can use that against these numbers below.

Fit

To fit age (head circumference):

  • baby 0-3 mos (14”/ 35.5 cm)
  • baby 3-6 mos (15”/3 8 cm)
  • baby 6-12 mos (16”/ 40.5 cm)
  • toddler (18”/ 45.5 cm)
  • preschool (19” / 32.5 cm)
  • child (20”/ 51 cm)
  • teen/sm adult (21”/ 53.5 cm)
  • med/lg adult (23”/ 58.5 cm)

Adjustments

To make a slouchy hat you can crochet more repeat rounds to make your hat 1” – 3” taller. Add these after your last round of increases. This will give you the slouchy effect.

You can add a pom pom for a little flair. I love using my Clover pom pom maker*, but there are ways to make poms without one too.

Adding stripes is an easy and fun way to customize your basic hat.
