Free Square Puff Stitch Crochet Blanket Pattern
The Piemonte Puff Stitch Blanket is an easy crochet granny square pattern. The center out start means this blanket can be made to any size easily.
This beginner friendly crochet blanket features puff stitches at the corners. The simple double crochets contrast with the puff stitches for a beautiful blanket.
This free crochet blanket pattern is written for a baby blanket size. However, this square project allows you to keep crocheting this blanket to any length. Photos are included of the first few crochet rounds, from there it’s an easy one row repeat.

Yarn
I used Caron Cakes* to crochet this puff stitch blanket. The baby blanket size is crocheted with 3 cakes in White Truffle.
The shades of dark grey, light grey, beige and white yarn create a neutral crochet blanket palette. The best part of this yarn is no color changes!
I love that this baby blanket is the perfect gift for a boy or girl. The different colors, the puff stitch and border are all designed to work for either. And I’m sure, this would make a fun crochet throw blanket for home too.
Construction
The Piemonte Crochet Puff Stitch Blanket is worked in the round. To keep both sides of this crochet blanket looking great, you’ll turn after joining each round. This means you’ll work on both sides of your blanket.
I worked and reworked the puff stitch joining on this pattern. I really wanted it to look as nice as possible. To get the puff stitch join just right, I finally settled on using a long loop to start, just by pulling up the yarn as tall as my stitch.
Then when it’s time to join, you skip that long loop and slip stitch to the top of the first puff stitch. I found I liked the way this combination looked best. So when I turn and start a new round I’m not adding unnecessary chain stitches.
My favorite thing about this crochet project is the hidden seam in the puff stitch corner space!

Notes
- Starting long loop doesn’t count as a st.

I’m a bit confused. The text in the description states that you join by skipping the long loop and sl st in the top of the puff stitch and that it looks better & leaves unnecessary stitches. The purchased pattern states to join into the long loop. Unfortunately, I’m on round six and have followed the purchased pattern.
Hi Elaine,
Sorry for the confusion on that wording. You’re doing it correctly, as in the PDF Pattern. I’ll update the wording in that paragraph. Thanks for letting me know.
