Sharing is caring!

Knit a rustic mug rug with this easy knitting pattern. The textured fabric is so simple to make you won’t want to stop knitting them!

With more knits than purls this knitting pattern comes together quickly. You can make these fringed mug rugs or leave it off for a simple look.

Pair this mug rug with a coffee cup and they make great gifts. I love how fast and easy these are to make. Plus there are so many different ways to make it special.

Knit a few of these in different colors and that’s great way to use up scrap yarn. A mug coaster like this is the perfect project for a beginner knitter to practice their skills on.

The Yarn

Mug rug patterns don’t have to use cotton yarn exclusively. You can use other fibers, especially if you want to use up leftover yarn from your stash.

But I do like how absorbent cotton is for these. I use Dishie yarn which is a #4 medium worsted weight cotton yarn.

While you can substitute a different brand of yarn, you do want to choose the same weight category.

Materials

  • 25 yds Dishie*, a #4 medium worsted weight yarn (100% cotton, 190 yd / 100 g), color: linen (1) ball.
  • 4.5mm / US Size 7*, Yarn needle, Measuring tape, Scissors

Notes

  • All measurements are taken before blocking.
  • Stitch multiple is 7, plus 6.

Skill Level

Easy

Gauge

4” / 10 cm x 4” / 10 cm = 18 sts x 32 rows in pattern

Finished Size

4” / 10 cm x 6” / 15 cm

Adjustments

You can simply cast on more or fewer stitches to adjust to your desired length, but since this pattern does have stitch counts to contend with you will need to cast on a stitch multiple of 7, plus 6.

To make a taller mug rug, you will simple keep repeating the row repeat until you reach your height.

Stitches/Abbreviations

BO – bind off

CO – cast on, you can use any cast on you like. I’m partial to the crochet hook cast on!

K – knit

P – purl

rep – repeat

RS – right side

st (s) – stitch (es)

WS – wrong side
