Free Crochet Pattern Shawl with Pockets Ana Pocket Shawl
The Ana Pocket Shawl crochet pattern is free and pairs simplicity with a pop! The bobble like, pineapple stitch creates an eye catching pocket and center detail.
This pocket shawl crochets up quickly in chunky weight yarn. Which means, you can make it and wear it this season!
I love a good puff stitch, but they can be yarn eaters. To keep the yarn usage under wraps, I opted for a 4 row repeat featuring those luscious pineapple puff stitches.
And to balance out the simplicity I went all in on the pineapple stitches for the pockets of this shawl. I love the beautiful texture and how bobblicious they are in the bulky weight yarn.

Previously I’ve featured the pineapple stitch in the Ambra Triangle Scarf Crochet Pattern. These beauties standout in the otherwise simple granny stitch scarf pattern.
While not a pineapple stitch, I do love this Leaning Puff Stitch Scarf from Crochet ‘n’ Create. It’s so pretty and features those puffs beautifully!
Those pockets make this extra cozy shawl warm. I love the pineapple stitch on these pockets.
The rows of pineapple stitches and extended half double crochet come together quickly in the bulky yarn and make a great stitch combination.
If you haven’t worked these stitches before I have linked a video tutorial for the exhdc below. It works up tall like double crochet stitches.

- tapestry needle, scissors, measuring tape

Notes
- Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
- Stitch multiple is 5, plus 10 and if you’re using a chain start (and not foundation stitches) you need 1 more.
- Take your wingspan measurement before you begin. See details on Fit/Adjustments.

Gauge
4″ / 10 cm x 4” / 10 cm = 9 ehdc x 5.5 rows of ehdc
Finished Dimensions
48” long when laid flat x 13” wide
Construction
This pocket shawl is worked sideways, as a rectangle. The pockets are crocheted separately and sewn on.
Your starting chain is your width. The number of rows you crochet will be your length.
Fit/Adjustment
To make different sizes, start with a different number of foundation stitches change the width (or height), see stitch multiple on Notes.
To make your shawl longer (to wrap around the body), repeat as many center rows as needed. The length of your shawl when adding pockets should match up with the length of your arms.
To take measurements for your pocket shawl, hold your arms spread wide apart. Have someone else (if you can) measure from fingertip to fingertip. That’s how long you will want yours to be.
For reference, modeled pictures show a 5′ 2″ woman wearing a 48″ long shawl. I find patch pockets most comfortable about where my pants pockets are located-at about hip height.
Remember when adjusting that changes will also effect the amount of yarn needed so plan accordingly.

Pocket Shawl Crochet Pattern Free Ana Shawl Pattern
The Ana Pocket Shawl crochet pattern is a free, chunky crochet pattern with pineapple stitch pockets and detail.
Materials
- 635-762 yds/581-697m of #5 bulky weight yarn, pictured in Lion’s Pride Woolspun (discontinued); Color Made Easy is a suitable substitute
Tools
- 7 mm hook, or crochet hook size needed to meet gauge
- yarn needle
- scissors
- measuring tape
Instructions
Start
- Fhdc 29 or Ch 30 and hdc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each ch across, turn. (29 sts)
- Ch 1, ehdc in same st and each st across, turn. (29 sts)
- Repeat row 2 until you have 18 rows or 13“/33cm. Most of this section will be covered with the pocket.
Center
- (WS) Ch 1, ehdc in same st and next 3 sts, Ps in next st, *{ehdc in next 4 sts, Ps in next st} rep from * across, ehdc in last 4 sts to end of row, turn.
- Ch 1, ehdc in same st and each st across, turn. (29 sts)
- Rep row 2.
- Rep row 2.
If lengthening your crochet rectangle shawl, I would recommend adding more rows of this 4 row repeat. These 4 rows add about 3.5”/9cm to the shawl. The final rows (59-73) of the shawl add about 11.”
End
- Ch 1, ehdc in same st and each st across, turn.
- Rep previous row over the last 14 rows. (to match your first section)
Pockets Pattern
Make 2
Finished pocket is 9”/23cm x 9”/23cm.
If you want to change your pocket width, keep the stitch count an odd #.
- Fhdc 19 of Ch 20 and hdc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each ch across, turn. (19 sts)
- Ch 1, hdc in same st, *{Ps in next st, hdc in next st} rep from * across, turn.
- Ch 1, hdc in same st and in each st across, turn. (19 sts)
- Rep Rows 2-3. If you want to change the length for deep pockets, keep repeating rows 2 -3 and be sure to end with a Row 3.
Cut yarn and leave a long tail for seaming.
Finishing
- Pin your pockets to the bottoms of the shawl. I placed the bottom of my pocket 3 rows (about 2”/5cm) up from the bottom edge of my shawl.
- Check your placement by trying on your shawl.
- Use tail, or matching yarn, and needle to sew the sides and bottom of pocket to shawl. Use a mattress stitch or whip stitch to sew.
- Cut yarn and weave in ends.
- Rep for 2nd pocket.
Notes
I hope you enjoy your beautiful pocket shawl!
