Pebbled Beanie a Free Crochet Hat Pattern in All Sizes

Crochet hat pattern for the Pebbled Beanie, a highly textured top down hat. This free crochet hat pattern abounds with texture. Crochet this hat pattern in all sizes, from baby to adult.

I love how this Pebbled Beanie worked up in grey. The modified mini bean stitch I used for this one really reminded me of pebbles, hence the name Pebbled Beanie.

I love textured hats crocheted in a single color like this, but it would also look great in stripes too. Even if you’ve never crocheted the mini bean stitch you can make this hat!

It’s a version of puff stitch and I explain exactly how to do it below. The mini bean has a bit more stretch than your standard crochet stitches.

I’ve accommodated for that stretch into the pattern, so you’ll notice that in between increasing rounds there are non increasing rounds to compensate for the stretchiness.

With that being said gauge is important for this hat (and I crochet loosely) so be sure to check yours and make adjustments.

The Inspiration

I’ve been designing a series of hats with cancer patients in mind that have a bit more interest to them than just a regular crochet hat. The mini bean stitch worked up so well for this crochet beanie.

The Pebbled Beanie crochet hat offers full coverage, with no holes or gaping in between stitches. Oftentimes the interesting bits about crochet hats are the “holes” formed in our stitches. But that doesn’t work when chemo causes our loved ones to lose their hair.

Materials

• 5mm (H) crochet hook*, or hook needed to meet gauge
• 1 ball-5oz/251 yards of #4 medium worsted weight yarn, I used Lion Brand’s Heartland in Mt. Rainier*
• yarn needle*
• scissors
• measuring tape

mb-insert your hook into the stitch to be worked, yo and pull up a loop (2 loops on your hook), yo (3 loops on your hook) insert your hook back into the same st, yo and pull up a loop (4 loops on your hook), yo and pull through all 4 loops on your hook. Do not ch 1.

I first used this stitch in my crochet bowtie pattern. I called it the mini puff stitch and there’s a tutorial for it too.

Gauge

Gauge is important to this pattern, adjust your hook size or tension accordingly.
