How to Crochet the Mini Bean Stitch Step by Step
Learn how to crochet the mini bean stitch in this step by step tutorial. This highly textured crochet stitch looks like a miniature version of the crochet puff stitch. The mini bean stitch adds a lot of pop to so many of your crochet projects.
When you crochet the mini bean stitch you’ll see its only one repeat row that creates a reversible fabric. So even though the stitches themselves lean in opposite directions, it’s the same on both sides.
This beautiful stitch crochets into quite a solid fabric with amazing texture. The mini bean crochets up into a lovely blanket, scarf or hat.

Patterns Using This Stitch
I used a modified version of the mini bean stitch in the Pebbled Beanie. To keep this crochet beanie nice and warm, I dropped the chain 1 so the stitches are snug together.
When I was designing the Pebbled Beanie, I started with a standard puff stitch. But felt it was just too big for the hat I had in mind, so I modified it.
At the time I thought I discovered this new stitch, but of course, crochet has been around longer than me and it was actually very similar to the mini bean stitch!
Since the Pebbled Beanie is crocheted in the round, the mini bean stitch looks a little different. When you crochet in the round, you’re usually only looking at the front side of the stitches. So the modified mini bean stitch I used looks more uniform than the standard mini bean stitch.
Another design that I crocheted the mini bean stitch in is the Pixie Spice Hat. This hat uses a combination of stitches and is crocheted in a rectangle. Then it’s seamed to create the pixie point.
Notes
You’ll need an odd number of stitches for this stitch pattern.
Common mistakes to look out for when crocheting the mini bean stitch.
- Be sure you’re inserting your hook without yarning over the first time. I often catch myself yarning over first, which gives me an extra loop. We yarn over first for so many common stitches, it’s an easy mistake to make!
- Don’t forget to ch 1 after each mini bean stitch; and chain 2 on the last one of the row.
- Check that you’re inserting your hook into the mini bean stitch and not the chain one. The mini bean stitch sits on the side and the chain 1 sits on top. The chain 1 will be the stitch you skip. You can see in the picture how much this stitch tilts.
