Merletto Scarf Crochet Pattern a Lacy Summer Scarf
The Merletto Scarf is a light and open skinny scarf pattern. This little scarf adds a pop of color to your summer wardrobe without weighing you down.
The open lace stitch is easy to crochet. It’s a version of the v-stitch.
I chose to add fringe to the edges of the scarf, but that is optional so you can leave it off, if you prefer.
I had two balls of yarn so I opted to make a scarf. However, this pattern can be sewn up into a light weight cowl, if you prefer that style.
In the scarf pattern below I include instructions for both options.

Yarn
The yarn for this crochet pattern was generously supplied by WeCrochet.* I was looking for a cotton yarn that was soft, supple and smooth. I’m happy to say their Comfy Worsted yarn is all of those things and more!
The color selection is wonderful. My little lady loves a magenta, so I chose this bright pink-Zinnia with her in mind.
I have to be careful crocheting with cotton, so I definitely want to use yarns that glide easily and don’t add extra tension to my hands.
The Comfy Worsted was really easy to crochet with. I love the saturated color and sheen too!
This is a #4 medium worsted weight yarn. It’s also a blend of pima cotton and acrylic. I really like cotton blends, as they tend to be stronger.
Stitches in this Pattern
The easy lace for this scarf uses the double crochet and chains. There are photos for the rows in the pattern below.

Notes
- Please read through all notes and pattern before you begin.
- Work up a gauge swatch using the provided gauge information. If your gauge matches great, continue on. If not, change your hook size and swatch again. If your stitches are smaller, go up a hook size, if they’re larger, go down a hook size.
- Ch 3 counts as a stitch, I highly recommend using a ch 3 alternative, here’s my favorite.
- Ch 4 counts as a dc + ch 1.
- Stitch multiple is 3.

This scarf is crocheted on the short end. This means the number of stitches you start with will be how wide your scarf measures.
So as you crochet more rows, your scarf will increase in length. This makes it easy to adjust.
Fit/Adjustment
The stitch multiple for this scarf is 3. To adjust you can add/subtract in 3s to my starting chain.

Merletto Scarf Crochet Pattern
Crochet lacy scarf for summer in cotton yarn. This light and lovely accessory make a great gift or nice addition to your warm weather wardrobe.
Materials
- #4 medium worsted weight yarn, pictured in Comfy Worsted Yarn* (75% Pima Cotton, 25% Acrylic, 1.76 oz/50g, 109 yd/100m) color: zinnia, 2 balls;

- 5mm H-8 US crochet hook, or hook needed to meet gauge
- Yarn needle
- Measuring tape
- Scissors
Instructions
- Row 1. Dc in the 4th ch from your hook (skipped chs count as first dc) sk next ch, *{all in next ch: (dc, ch 3, dc), sk next 2 chs} rep from * until last 3 chs, sk 1 ch, dc in each of the last 2 chs, turn. (29 sts)
- Row 2. Ch 4, sk next 2 dcs, all in next ch 3 sp: (dc, ch 3, dc), *{sk next 2 dcs, all in next ch 3 sp: (dc, ch 3, dc)} rep from * until last 3 sts then ch 1, sk next 2 dcs and dc in top of 3rd ch, turn. (29 sts)
- Row 3. Ch 4, sk both the next ch 1 + dc, then all in next ch 3 sp: (dc, ch 3, dc), *{sk next 2 dcs, all in next ch 3 sp: (dc, ch 3, dc)} rep from * across, until last 3 sts then ch 1, sk both the next dc + ch 1 and dc in top of 3rd ch, turn. (29 sts)
- Continue to rep Row 3 for length of project. See suggested lengths under Finishing below.
Last row. Ch 3, dc in next st, sk next 2 dcs, all in next ch 3 sp: (dc, ch 1, dc), *{sk next 2 dcs, all in next ch 3 sp: (dc, ch 1, dc)} rep from * until last 3 sts then ch 1, sk next 2 dcs and dc in top of 3rd ch. (19 sts)
Ch 21
Finishing
For a cowl: work until 36”-48” long. Cut yarn and leave a long tail. Block. Seam short ends together.
For a scarf: work until 60”-67” long. Cut yarn and weave in ends. Block.
To add fringe to your scarf, cut 12” lengths of yarn, which yields approximately 6” of fringe. Pair them up and fold in half. Use your hook to pull through stitches at both ends of the scarf. Use your fingers to loop yarn through itself, securing it to the scarf. Trim.
