Sharing is caring!

La Via free crochet tote pattern is the perfect market tote bag for summer days. You’ll be ready for a day at the market, the park or the beach with La Via by your side.

This crochet tote bag includes a solid bottom, taller mesh bag and single wide strap. There’s plenty of room in this market tote!

Every crochet market tote needs a beautiful mesh stitch and this is my favorite. You can get the tutorial on this stitch which I also use in the June Market Tote post.

Gift Ideas

Crochet bags make great gifts for everyone. You can use them at the farmers market or grocery store. They’re a great way to replace plastic bags.

Crocheting market bags for friends and family in their favorite colors is a thoughtful gift idea.

Sizing

I was able to fill this crochet market tote bag with 2 towels, a bathing suit and all the sunscreen goodies we would need.

It will still stretch to accommodate more. La Via is a versatile, reusable tote bag that will be your go to this summer.

The bag itself lengthens quite a bit as you can see here. I’m only 5′ 2″ and stuffed as it is, it’s still comfortable. This large mesh bag is the perfect size to fit towels for all 4 of my kids in this one!

Read on for all the details on how you can make your own crocheted bag with this free crochet pattern.

It so fun to crochet in color for the summer! Crochet bags are beautiful patterns in all the colors.

I think some of my brightest crochet projects are sun inspired!

The Yarn

This crochet tote pattern is made with #4 medium weight yarn. I used a cotton yarn, but you can substitute it with acrylic yarn. Just be aware that acrylic does not absorb water.

The Strap

Filling La Via bag so full means wearing it crossbody is a must. The wider strap distributes that weight better on the shoulder.

If you’d like a shorter bag, or one that doesn’t stretch quite as much, it’s a simple matter of leaving off a few rounds of the mesh. Or you might look at making the June Market Tote instead. This cute bag is La Via’s little sister.

One of my favorite features of this free crochet tote bag pattern is how the crochet mesh holes allow for loose sand to escape. At least some of it anyway. Seems like we find sand for years after a beach trip.

Materials

Notes

  1. Ch 3 counts as a stitch, I highly recommend using a ch 3 alternative, here’s my favorite.
  2. The bottom of the bag is worked in rounds and joined with slip stitches.
  3. The center of the bag is worked in continuous rounds-do not join, just continue to work around. Mark the first stitch of each round with a stitch marker to keep track.
  4. When you get to the top of the bag then it is again joined with a slip stitch, as indicated in the pattern.

Skill Level

Easy

This easy crochet pattern is great for advanced beginners.

Finished dimensions

The bag alone is 16” tall, but 26” with the strap.

The opening is 13” wide.

The bag when laid flat is 14” wide.

Adjustments

To make the body of the bag smaller, you can work few repeats of the mesh section. To make it larger, add more repeat rounds.

You can adjust the strap length by working fewer or more rows. I’ve also added instructions for a single crochet strap with less stretch.

You can also make the bottom of the bag smaller or larger by making less or more repeat rounds.
