Crochet Hat + Scarf Dakota Set Free Crochet Pattern

The Dakota Hat crochet pattern pops in contrasting colors. This crochet textures stunning in bold colors. The Dakota Hat and crochet scarf pattern set is sure to please the whole family.

Red Heart with Love has so many gorgeous color options. Deciding on which color combination may be the hardest part.

The Twin Clusters stitch is worked in the pink color. Simple stitches follow in the contrast row. Theres a short tutorial and written instructions for how to crochet the twin cluster stitch under the Special Stitch section.

The Dakota Crochet Hat pattern is available in baby size 6 mos up to adult. The matching scarf pattern is also written in 3 sizes for your teen or you tall friend. The Dakota Scarf is pictured with fringe, but of course that’s optional.

Hat Materials

*(For Both Hat & Scarf you’ll need 2 balls of Red Heart with Love in contrasting colors)

  • Red Heart with Love* in Papaya (Color A) and Brown (Color B) #4 med worsted weight yarn, Baby 6-12 mos-110 yds, (Toddler-135 yds, Child-145 yds, Tween-160 yds, Sm Adult-185 yds, Lg Adult-195 yds) Approximately 2/3rds of the yardage is in Color A & 1/3 of it is Color B. 
  • 5.5 mm (I) hook*
  • Yarn needle
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors

Hat Notes 

  • First you will work the brim of the hat in rows and sew the short ends together to form the band. 
  • Then you will attach your yarn to the top of the band and crochet in rounds for the rest of the hat. 
  • Pattern is written as Baby 6-12 mos (Toddler, Child, Tween, Sm Adult, Lg Adult) 
  • Stitch multiple is 3 for the main hat stitch.

Special Stitch 

Tc-Twin Cluster Stitch-are worked over three stitches: *{yo, insert hook in st, yo and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo and pull through 2 loops} rep from * 3x total in the same st, sk the next st, rep from * 3x total in the same st, yo and pull through all 7 loops on your hook. 

Gauge

Swatch-2”x 2”=7dc x 3.5 rows

Fit 

I’ve provide the “standard” head circumference by size and used a negative ease of 2” for the brim length. Of course, the best fit is with exact measurements, if you have them. This is a slouchy style hat so there is some looseness to the top.

Brim Pattern 

All sizes

Color A 

Ch 9, leave a long tail for sewing brim together.

  1. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across, turn. (8) 
  2. Ch 1, sc in the same, sc in the blo of the next 6 sc, sc in the last, turn. (8) 
  3. Rep last row until you’ve reached the length for you size in the chart
    above. 

To minimize weaving in ends, ss the ends of brim together with your working yarn and ch 1, sc 51 (57, 63, 66, 69, 75) evenly around. Then use your starting tail to sew the rest of the brim together. Alternately, you can cut your yarn and leave a tail long enough to sew the brim ends together to form the band. Then ss to top of the brim, ch 1 sc 51 (57, 63, 66, 69, 75) evenly around, ss to the top of the first sc. 51 (57, 63, 66, 69, 75) sc 

Hat Pattern 

Round 1. Begin Tc in the same st, sk next st, finish Tc in the next st, ch 2, *{begin Tc in the next st, sk next st, finish Tc in next st, ch 2} rep from * around, ss to the top of the first Tc. Join Color B to first Tc. 17 (19, 21, 22, 23, 25) Tc 

2. Sc in the same st, 2 dc in the next ch 2 sp, *{sc in top of next Tc, 2dc in next ch 2 sp} rep from * around, ss to first sc. Join Color A to first sc. 51 (57, 63, 66, 69, 75) st


Color A 

3. Begin TC in the first sc, sk next dc, finish Tc in next dc, ch 2, *{start Tc in next sc, sk next dc, finish Tc in next dc, ch 2} rep from * around, ss last ch 2 to first sc. Join Color B to first Tc. 17 (19, 21, 22, 23, 25) Tc 

4. In Color B Rep Round 2. 

5. In Color A Rep Round 3. 

Continue to repeat Rounds 2 & 3: 0 (1x, 1x, 2x, 3x, 3x) more times  

Round 6. (8, 8, 10, 12, 12) In Color B Rep Round 2. 

 Decrease 

Here you will begin decrease to close the top of the hat-note you’re only chaining 1 between Tc stitches.

Color A 

Round 7. (9, 9, 11, 13, 13) In Color A Begin Tc in first sc, sk next dc, finish Tc in next dc, ch 1, *{begin Tc in next sc, sk next dc, finish Tc in next dc, ch 1} rep from * around, ss last ch 1 to first sc. Join Color B to first Tc. 

Color B 

Round 8. (10, 10, 12, 14, 14) Dc2tog around, join to the first st with a ss. Join Color A to first st. 17 (19, 21, 22, 23, 25) dc2tog


Color A

Round 9. (11, 11, 13, 15, 15) Begin Tc in first st, sk next st, finish Tc in next st, ch 1, *{Begin Tc in next, sk next st, finish Tc in next, ch 1} rep from * around, in the last st: complete half a Tc =*{yo, insert hook in st, yo and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo and pull through 2 loops} rep from * 3x in last st, ch 1, ss to top of first. 

Leave a long tail and sew the hole closed. Finish off and add a pom pom, if desired.

 Dakota Scarf Pattern 

Teen-Adult Sizes

Scarf Materials

  • #4 med worsted weight yarn, I used Red Heart with Love in Papaya (Color A) and Brown (Color B) Teen/45”-252 yds, Sm Adult/55”-320 yds, Md Adult/70”-415 yds, Lg Adult/82”-485 yds) Approximately 2/3rds of the yardage is in Color A & 1/3 of it is Color B.
  • 5.5 mm (I) hook
  • Yarn needle, Measuring tape, Scissors

Scarf Notes

  • Ch 4 counts as dc + ch 1.
  • For all sizes the scarf is 6” wide.
  • Stitch multiple is 3 plus 3 for the foundation row.
  • Crochet over your ends to minimize weaving in.
  • My scarf curled in like shown, which I liked, but if you prefer a flat version just steam block it when finished.

Row 2. Ch 4, *{begin Tc in next sc, sk next sc, finish Tc in next sc, ch 2} rep from * rep until last 4 sts then begin Tc in next sc, sk next sc, finish Tc in next sc, ch 1, dc in last, turn. Change to Color B.

Row 3. Ch 1, sc in same st, dc in next ch sp, sc in top of cluster, *{2 dc in ch 2 sp, sc in top of cluster} until ch 4, then dc in ch sp, sc in 3rd ch, turn. (20) Change to Color A.

Color A

Row 4. Ch 4, *{begin Tc in next st, sk next st, finish Tc in next st, ch 2} rep from * rep until last 4 sts then begin Tc in next st, sk next st, finish Tc in next st, ch 1, dc in last, turn. Change to Color B.

Rep Rows 3 & 4 until desired length is reached. 

Suggested lengths:

Teen size: 73 rows= 45” (pictured) + fringe = 57”

Sm Adult: 91 rows = 55”

Md Adult: rows 117 = 70”

Lg Adult: rows 139 = 82”

Fringe

On both ends:

Attach Color B, ch 1, sc in same and in each st across.

Cut 12” pieces of yarn, pair them up and loop them through each sc on both ends. Trim. For a little tutorial on fringe click here.
