Hair loss is one of the many unwelcome side effects cancer patients have to endure. Having a beautiful hat made by someone with love may is just one small way we can contribute.

For a great hat that will be loved by all you’ll want to chose a soft yarn. I used an acrylic yarn for this hat design but you can use any fiber that’s appropriate. Be sure to check gauge.

Materials

Yarn By Size

0 – 3 mos – 63 yd (58 m)

3 – 6 mos – 91 yd (83 m)

Toddler – 106 yd (97 m)

Child – 116 yd (106 m)

Teen/Sm Adult – 125 yd (115 m)

M/L Adult – 133 yd (122 m)

Notes

  1. Please read through all notes and pattern before you begin.
  2. Please check gauge first by crocheting rounds 1 – 4 with your chosen yarn + needles, block your swatch + measure the diameter. Compare it to the listed gauge and adjust your hook size if needed.
  3. Stitch multiple is 3.
  4. This hat is worked top down in the round.

Gauge

Rnds 1 – 4 = 4.5” across

15 sts x 8 rnds (after blocking) to 4” (10 cm) measured in dc.

Please swatch carefully, as incorrect gauge will cause the hat to come out the wrong size.

Stitches

US Terms

ch(s) – chain(s)

dc – double crochet

FPdc – front post double crochet

rep – repeat

sk – skip the indicated stitch

st(s) – stitch(es)

Adjustments

To adjust height of hat add or subtract dc rnds. To adjust the overall size of hat first try going up or down a size. Otherwise add or subtract increase rnds on the crown. You need a stitch multiple of 3.

The top of the hat starts like a basic beanie with simple stitches and increases. Then there are 3 rounds of cable stitches. Then you repeat.

The unique design is made with special stitches you see as the cables with front post stitches, and x-stitches (or crossed double crochet). To help support you there is a video tutorial if you need it.

Crochet Cancer Challenge

It seems like everyone knows someone who is battling cancer. With this in mind every year Christine from Sweet Potato 3 organizes the Crochet Cancer Challenge where makers can donation chemo caps from free crochet patterns.

Crochet designers come together to donate a new hat pattern to you, so that you can make a crochet chemo cap and then donate them to your local cancer center, or loved one. This pattern was a part of the 2024 crochet cancer challenge.

  1. Hi, I have a question on the Teen/SmAdult, Round 6, states that the hat should measure 7.25″ for the medium/LG adult. Is this correct fir the Teen/sm adult?
