Summer Shawl Crochet Pattern | Montagna Filet Crochet Shawl

Sharing is caring!

The Montagna is an easy rectangle shawl crochet pattern. This open design uses filet crochet to achieve a lightweight design that’s perfect for a summer shawl.

This crochet shawl pattern features a subtle mountain, or “montagna” in Italian, outline. The main shawl stitch is filet crochet, or double crochets and chains.

The mountain outline is simply made with blocks of double crochets together. They stack, or overlap in a triangular shape to achieve the mountain design.

The mountain outline is inspired by our summer visits to the mountains. Often the mornings and evening are cool, so a lightweight shawl is perfect.

I’m always in awe of the mountain against the horizon. I wanted to capture a little bit of the mountain in this shawl.

Here you can see the peak of the mountain in the shawl a bit more since the top color is so light.

The blues are arranged from the bottom up, darkest to lightest, creating an ombre effect.

This ombre shawl works well if you have shades of yarn in the same color. But, it’s also a good one to use for solids or a variety of yarn colors.

I love the drape of this shawl. The double crochets and chains, or filet crochet, makes a beautiful rectangle shawl.

This is an easy, rectangle shawl pattern using worsted weight yarn. You can see the type of yarn and colors I use under Materials.

I was really going for a subtle mountain effect in this shawl pattern, which I love.

I also use the filet crochet stitch in the Bobble Cocoon Shrug, which features bobbles and filet crochet in a simple rectangle that you seam into a shrug or small cardigan. This pattern is available in children’s sizes.

Summer designs are so fun. I really like this beautiful crochet top from the Lavender Chair. These looks so quick and pretty to make!

Materials

  • Cascade Yarns Pacific,* a #4 med weight yarn (60% acrylic / 40% Superwash Merino Wool, 3.5 oz/100g, 213 yd/195 m) colors: 1 ball each of (47) navy-Color A, (65) denim heather-Color B, (32) country blue-Color C, (20) baby blue-Color D; or 852 yds in comparable yarn.
  • 4.5mm US size G+ hook,* or hook needed to meet gauge.
  • yarn needle
  • measuring tape
  • scissors

Notes

  1. Please read through all notes and pattern before you begin.
  2. Work up a gauge swatch using the provided gauge information. If your gauge matches great, continue on. If not, change your hook size and swatch again. If your stitches are smaller, go up a hook size, if they’re larger, go down a hook size.
  3. Ch 3 counts as a stitch, I highly recommend using a ch 3 alternative, here’s my favorite.
  4. Ch 4 counts as a dc + ch 1 throughout.
  5. Stitch multiple is an odd number.

Adjustments

The finished length of this shawl is 62.” If you would like a longer shawl, I suggest adding stitches before and after the design.

You need to keep an odd number of stitches for the filet crochet pattern. So if you want to crochet a longer, say 72″ shawl then you can start with 257 stitches.

This is 36 stitches more than the written pattern, so you will add half of the stitches (18) to start and half to finish. You’ll just have to remember to work those stitches in the regular filet pattern (dc + ch 1) and then follow the pattern for the mountain design after the stitches you added. Or you can start your mountain blocks early and add more, as needed.

To make your shawl taller than the one here, you can easily add more rows of the filet crochet, like row 2 in the pattern. You can add them before or after the mountain design, or both.
