Sorrento Shawl Crochet Pattern
The Sorrento Shawl Crochet Pattern combines texture and color for a cozy shawl. This warm rectangle shawl can include fringe, pockets or neither.
The shawl is worked on the long edge with alternating sections of textured stitches. I chose two colors for the striping, but of course, more colors or a solid would be lovely.
The free crochet pattern for this shawl below includes photos for each row or section. For even more support all the stitches have tutorial links as well.

Yarn
I use Paintbox Simply Chunky yarn*, this is a #5 bulky weight yarn. However, I find it to be thinner than many other in it’s weight. You can use #4 medium worsted weight yarn, if you can meet gauge.
A #5 bulky weight yarn that is similar is Red Heart Soft Essentials.* Or thicker #4 yarns, like Red Heart With Love* should work well also.
The best way to check is just to work up a gauge swatch!
Stitches in this Shawl
The Sorrento is a rectangle shawl or pocket scarf that features a different stitch combination for beautiful texture.
I link up tutorials in the Stitches section. Since this pattern uses bobbles and post stitches (among others) the level is intermediate.
However, an advanced beginner can make this shawl pattern too. I include pictures of almost every row, and many are repeats.
Again, most of the stitches have tutorials, so beginners can use those to help them learn (or remember) new stitches.

Materials
- 8 balls (100g/3.5oz) each of Paintbox Simply Chunky Yarn* (100% acrylic yarn), this yarn is labeled as #5 chunky weight yarn, but it’s thinner than other #5 yarns, and is more similar to Red Heart With Love a #4 worsted weight yarn. So you can use either a #4 or #5 yarn for this shawl.

My favorite Hooks are Furls* and Clover*!
Notes
- Ch 3 counts as a stitch, I highly recommend using a ch 3 alternative, here are my favorites.
- Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
- Stitch multiple is 4, plus 3 for the foundation chain.

Block
Block your shawl here. Pay special attention to the front post half double crochet section, as it is so tight.
Border
- On RS In CC, join to any corner with a sl st.
- In corner place (sc, dc, ch 1, dc, sc).
- Sc evenly around the sides, placing (sc, dc, ch 1, dc, sc) in each corner, join with a sl st to first st.
- *Along the FPhdc section I added esc stitches to add a little more height since it pulled in more on one side.
Finishing
- Cut yarn and weave in ends.
Optional Extras
Fringe
- Cut 17” lengths of yarn for 8” finished fringe.
- Fold in half and pull through stitches at the end of the shawl.
- Repeat on other side.
Pockets Pattern = 9” x 11” Make 2.
- Row 1. Fdc 30, this gives us the height of the pocket (11”); you can adjust this number by 2s.
- Rep Rows 13-33 in the pattern.
- In CC, Ch 1, starting in same st hdc in each st across, continue to hdc evenly around the square, placing (hdc, ch1, hdc) in each corner st, join with a sl st.
- Cut yarn and leave a long tail for seaming.
- For best pocket placement, try on your shawl to find your arm length and where you would like your pockets.
- Sew pockets on, matching up the like rows.
- Cut yarn and weave in ends.
