Simple Summer Sun Hat Crochet Pattern in All Sizes

Crochet a cotton sun hat for summer, in sizes for the family! This free crochet hat pattern includes sizes for baby through adult.

While the cotton yarn is a summer classic, you can also crochet this sun hat in acrylic yarn. The open mesh sides make it breathable.

Adorn your hat with a ribbon for a sweet finish. These crochet sun hats make fabulous baby gifts, and you can crochet one for mom to match too.

My youngest is modeling the Toddler size sun hat here. It’s hard to believe she was ever this little.

The original pattern for this sun hat was released in just toddler size. It’s been such a popular pattern, I’ve been meaning to write up more sizes. I’m so excited to finally have all the hat sizes ready!

The Yarn

The cotton yarn is so very soft. I love that it’s breathable, for a light fit.

These little hats don’t require much yarn. You can make all the sizes with one skein or less.

  • 1.25oz/50g 90yds/83m of #4 worsted weight cotton yarn, I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Cotton! Yarn in Periwinkle
  • 1/4″ ribbon about 30″/76cm long-enough to wrap around the hat and tie into a bow.

Notes

  1. Ch 3 counts as a stitch, I highly recommend using a ch 3 alternative, here’s my favorite.
  2. Ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as st.

The Crochet Sun Hat is an easy crochet pattern perfect for sunny days. This top down hat pattern also includes a photo tutorial. For the ultimate in comfort crochet this hat in cotton yarn.

Materials

  • I Love This Cotton! Yarn a #4 worsted weight cotton yarn 1 ball (100% cotton, 180yds/165m, 3.5oz/100g) color: periwinkle

Tools

  • 4mm (G) hook
  • 1/4″/.64cm ribbon 30"/76cm long
  • yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • scissors

Instructions

All Sizes

Begin with a magic circle.

  1. 11 double crochets in circle.Rnd 1: DC 11 into MC,
  2. Blue crochet magic circle closed.sl st back to first DC and pull the tail to close. (11 sts)
  3. Standing stitch to start round 2 of hat.Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1st DC here & throughout)-I’ve used a standing stitch here
  4. Second double crochet to increase circle.& DC in same st,
  5. 2 double crochets in each stitch of the circle.2 DC in each around,
  6. Slip stitch to join blue crochet circle in the round with magic circle.join last dc to 3rd ch with a sl st. (22 sts)
  7. Increase every other stitch around.Rnd 3: Ch 3 & DC in same st, DC in next st, *{2 DC in next st, 1 DC in next st} rep from *until end of rnd, join with a sl st to 3rd ch. (33 sts)
  8. 4 rounds of circle for sun hat crown.Rnd 4: Ch 3 & DC in same st, *{1 DC in next st, 1 DC in next st, 2 DC in next st} rep from * until end, join with a sl st to 3rd ch. (44 sts) Stop increasing here for 0-3 mos + 3-6 mos, go to Hat Sides.
  9. Rnd 5: Ch 3 & DC in same st, *{DC in next 3 sts, 2 DC in next st} rep from * until end, join with a sl st to 3rd ch. (55 sts) Stop increasing here for 6-12 mos + 12-24 mos, toddler + Child go to Hat Sides.
  10. Crochet circle 6 rounds of increase complete.Rnd 6: Ch 3 & DC in same st, *{DC in next 4 sts, 2 DC in next st} rep from * until end, join with a sl st to 3rd ch. (66 sts) Stop increasing here for Teen + Sm Adult, go to Hat Sides.
  11. Rnd 7: Ch 3 & DC in same st, *{DC in next 5 sts, 2 DC in next st} rep from * until end, join with a sl st to 3rd ch. (77 sts) Stop increasing here for Med + Lg Adult, go to Hat Sides.

0-3 mos: Rep Rnd 3 for two more times. (3 total)
3-6 mos, 6-12 mos, 12-24 mos: Rep Rnd 3 for three more times. (4 total)

Next Rnd. Ch 3, DC in each DC and into each Ch sp until end, join with a sl st to 3rd ch.

Sides on hat complete before brim.

Ch 1 does not count as a st.

  2. Brim of hat starting in back loops.Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 SC in same st, 1 SC in next st, *{2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st} around until end, sl st to first sc to join.
  3. Rnd 3: Ch 1, 2 SC in same st, 1 SC in next 3 sts, *{2 SC in next st, SC in next 3 sts} until end, sl st to first sc to join. Stop here for sizes: 0-3 mos, 3-6 mos, 6-12 mos, 12-24 mos, and go to Trim unless you want a larger floppier brim then continue below.
  4. Rnd 4: Ch 1, 2 SC in same st, 1 SC in next 4 sts, *{2 SC in next st, SC in next 4 sts} until end, sl st to first sc to join. Stop here for Toddler, Child, Teen sizes and go to Trim unless you want a larger floppier brim then continue below.
  5. Rnd 5: Ch 1, 2 SC in same st, 1 SC in next 5 sts, *{2 SC in next st, SC in next 5 sts} until end, sl st to first sc to join. Stop here for Adult and go to Trim unless you want a larger floppier brim then continue below.

    If your brim is large enough skip to Trim.
  6. Sun hat brim tutorial.

Larger Brim

    1. To make a larger, floppier brim continue to add rounds of single crochet, spacing increases by one more stitch each rnd.
    2. For example:
      Next rd: {2 SC, SC 6 times}
    3. Following rd: {2 SC, SC 7 times}
    4. And so forth and so on: {2 SC, SC 8 times}

Trim

-Rnd count starts over.

  1. Rnd 1. Ch. 1, SC in each st around, sl st to first sc to join.
  2. Rnd 2. Ch 3, sk 2, Starting brim details with chain 3.sl st to next st, Skip and slip stitch chain 3 to hat brim.*{Ch 3, sk 2, sl st to next st} rep from * around until end, join with a sl st to 3rd ch.Sun hat flat with mesh sides and brim.

Finishing

  1. Crochet sun hat flat in light blue with ribbon.Feed a 1/4″ ribbon through the bottom row of DC & Ch spaces.
  2. Tie into a bow.
  3. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
