Chunky Crochet Hat a Free Pattern Tuscan Charm Beanie

Sharing is caring!

This chunky crochet beanie pattern is warm and cozy! Create a colorful and stylish crochet hat for those chilly winter days.

The Tuscan Charm Chunky Crochet Beanie crochets up quick in bulky yarn. These lovely muted colors pair beautifully and are easy to switch out.

One of my favorite things about crochet color work is being able to customize those colors. Hats are a great project for custom colors.

In this free crochet hat pattern you’ll work from the top of the hat down. Just like top down crochet sweaters you can try on the fit as you go.

So you can crochet a hat that fits great and customize those colors! The stripes really make the texture of these stitches stand out.

Everyone loves chunky crocheted hats. You can crochet them in all your favorite colors to pair with everything in your wardrobe.

And add that faux fur pom pom for a touch of luxury. Or make your own with a pom pom maker. My kids love making yarn pom poms.

These chunky crochet beanies make great gifts. Be sure to check out the matching Tuscan Charm Cowl too!

Yarn

This chunky, cozy hat is pictured in Lion Brand’s Hue + Me* yarn. The colors I chose are Rose Water + Spicy.

Rose Water is the lovely blushy pink color. The dark burnt orange is called Spicy.

One of the unique things about this #5 bulky weight yarn is that all the colors are made to pair with each other.

So you can feel confident that any colors of Hue + Me yarn are a great choice.

I love how this yarn works up in Stitching Together’s Chunky Triangle Scarf pattern. Love those tassels!

Stitch

This chunky hat features double crochet stitches and those eye catching post stitches. Chunky yarn and double crochets mean this beanie is a quick project.

The FPdc-front post double crochet lends this beanie the textured rows. And the classic double crochet means it’s a quick make.

Color Work

This hat includes crochet color work to get those contrasting stripes. I’ve included some tips in the Notes section below.

MC-or main color is the color you start crocheting with on the Crown. In the sample pictures I use pink.

Once you get to the Body, you’ll switch to the CC-contrasting color. My contrast color is Spicy (burnt orangey brown).

One the body there is a lot of switching colors. You’ll either change colors at the end of a round, or in between stitches for round 2.

If you’d like more info and tips on crocheting color work, check out my blog post on Color Changing Tips. These tips went with the Corner to Corner crochet blanket in the post, but they still apply here!

If you’ve never done color work in crochet before, you definitely can crochet this hat. There’s just a little of it, and hats crochet up fast.

Teen 55 yd MC and 30 yd CC / 50 m MC and 27 m CC.

Notes

  1. Ch 3 counts as a stitch, I highly recommend using a ch 3 alternative.
  2. Pictured is MC-main color in pink and CC-contrast color in spice.
  3. Color changes are for the entire round, except rounnd 2 of the Body. On round 2 you will change colors in between stitches, throughout the round.
  4. Color changing tip: before the last movement of a stitch, drop the first color and pick up the second color, finishing the stitch in the new color.
  5. Carry your colors through the round and up the round to minimize weaving in ends.
  6. Stitch multiple is 3.

Stitches/Abbreviations (US Terms)

CC – contrast color

ch (s)- chain (s)

dc – double crochet

FPdc – front post double crochet

mc – magic circle

MC – main color

rep – repeat

rnd – round

sk – skip the indicated stitch

sl st – slip stitch

st (s) – stitch (es)

Gauge

Rnds 1-3 = 5.75” / 14.5 cm diameter

If your rounds 1-3 are .25″ / .5 cm smaller or larger, your hat will still fit. Anymore than that and you’ll want to adjust your hook size. See the chart below for more specifics.

If you’re still having trouble meeting gauge, try a different yarn. Many of the #5 bulky weight yarns out there are pretty varied in thickness. Hue + Me is a pretty thick #5 bulky weight yarn.

Some crocheters who have a tighter tension may be able to meet gauge with a #6 super bulky weight yarn.

Level

This chunky yarn crochet hat is worked in the round. You will join the end of each round with a slip stitch. It’s worked top down.
