The Piemonte Crochet Puff Stitch Blanket is an easy crochet granny square pattern. This beginner friendly crochet blanket features puff stitches at the corners. The simple double crochets worked throughout provide an eye catching contrast.
This free crochet blanket pattern is written for a baby blanket size. However, the granny square design allows you to keep crocheting this blanket to any length. Photos are included of the first few crochet rounds, from there it’s an easy one row repeat.

Yarn
I used Caron Cakes to crochet this puff stitch blanket. The baby blanket size is crocheted with 3 cakes in White Truffle. The shades of dark grey, light grey, beige and white create a neutral crochet blanket palette.
I love that this baby blanket can be gifted for a boy or girl. The colors, the puff stitch and border are all designed to work for either. And I’m sure, this would make a fun crochet throw blanket for home too.
Construction
The Piemonte Crochet Puff Stitch Blanket is worked in the round. To keep both sides of this crochet blanket looking great, you’ll turn after joining each round. This means you’ll work on both sides of your blanket.
I worked and reworked the puff stitch joining on this pattern. I really wanted it to look as nice as possible. To get the puff stitch join just right, I finally settled on using a long loop to start, just by pulling up the yarn as tall as my stitch.
Then when it’s time to join, you skip that long loop and slip stitch to the top of the puff stitch. I found I liked the way this combination looked best. So when I turn and start a new round I’m not adding unnecessary chains.

Pin It Now & Make It Later

Materials
- 1149 yds of #4 medium worsted weight yarn, pictured is 3 Caron Cakes in White Truffle (383 yds each)
- 5.5mm hook
- yarn needle
- scissors
- measuring tape
Notes
- Starting long loop doesn’t count as a st.
- Worked in the round, but turned so you will work on both sides.
- Remember the puff stitch includes a ch 1, so when the pattern specifically says “ch 1” that is in addition to the ch 1 of the puff st.
- Sample is made with self striping yarn, but I changed yarns at the start of a row instead of letting the yarn change colors in the middle.

Crochet Puff Stitch Tangi Video
In this video I’m using my Clover Amour crochet hook size 5.5mm. I have a whole set of these and I love them. These crochet hooks glide so smoothly into stitches, which is super helpful on this puff stitch.
