Easy Patchwork Throw Blanket Free Crochet Pattern
Crochet a modern patchwork blanket with this easy pattern. The design of each square is unique and gives this beautiful blanket a comfy feel.
Crochet blankets are a great project, but sometimes finishing an entire blanket can feel overwhelming. Patchwork blankets are a great way to work toward finishing one little by little.
You can crochet one square a day or a week and still know you will get it finished in time for that baby shower or house warming.

Since the squares are crocheted first and then joined together you can easily make different sizes. If you want a baby blanket then only make 6 squares for a 3 x 3 square blanket. For a large cozy throw blanket make all 12 like this 3 x 4 rectangle blanket.
About Each Square
The blanket squares are each a different design from basic stitches to easy stitch patterns.
I chose a solid color for each one with a mix of neutrals and bright colors. You can choose your own color scheme of course, but I give all the details under Materials.
The finished size of each square is 12″ x 12″ after adding the single crochet border.
The Joining Method
When you’ve made all your squares it’s time to join them. This is where you bring your hard work together (literally)!
Since this design features textured solid squares I chose a similarly solid, but decorative way to join them.
The seaming is simple, but also makes a beautiful crochet blanket. To sew the squares together we’re using the humble whip stitch. Sewing this way is the easy way to join squares.
To make the whip stitch look great use the same color yarn to sew as the square border and work on the right side.
These patchwork blankets make a great yarn stash buster project. While you can use a variety of colors for your squares, make sure you reserve enough yarn to border each square and sew them together all in the same color. This will give you a beautiful join for your beautiful blanket.

Dealing with Uneven Squares
Another thing I was able to do with the whip stitch is sew two stitches from one square to just one stitch on the other. With different stitch patterns sometimes there are more or less border stitches on the two squares you’re trying to join.
To do this I use an invisible join technique but with the yarn needle. For the square that has extra stitches, insert the needle in one loop then, immediately bring the needle, up and over the loop of the next stitch so you’re catching two stitches. Then continue the whip stitch like normal. See the full tutorial on using the whip stitch to join crochet squares here.
The Border
I designed the border to complement the solid textured squares. This easy border pattern includes single, double and half double crochet stitches.
Since each square is a different pattern I didn’t want the border to be dependent on the stitch count.
The neutral stripes help bring the squares together into a cohesive blanket design. Get the free crochet border pattern here.

- If you have 2 balls of one color then you will be able to make 3 squares.
- As each of the square patterns is different, use either the double crochet or half double crochet square to check gauge.
- Stitch multiple is given under each square if you need to adjust it.

Block Squares
Block each square to 12”
Square Border
After making 12 blanket squares make sure you added a single crochet border around each square using the same color.
Then join Fisherman in any corner with a sl st and add another single crochet border round.
Ch 1, sc evenly around the square, placing a (sc, ch 1, sc) in each corner, sl st to the first sc to join.
Cut yarn and weave in ends.
Layout
Arrange your squares in the desired order. Here is how I arranged them. Place them all right side up. It helps to take a picture of how you order them for seaming.
Sew Squares Together
Use same color yarn as the second single crochet border round. Here I use Fisherman to sew the squares together.
You’ll need a length of yarn and yarn needle.
Work on the right side.
Use the whip stitch to sew them together. Sew vertically first in long strips. Then sew them together horizontally.
Go through center two loops (one from each square).
Sew snugly but don’t pull too tight.
When adding on another pair of squares, continue in the same manner. Be sure to catch one loop from each square at the join. Don’t worry if it doesn’t seem too secure.
When you come back through to sew them together horizontally you’ll be able to strengthen the join again.
Leave about 6” tail when starting, finishing or join new yarn to weave away securely.
Blanket Border
Once all squares are seamed together, join Fisherman with a sl st to any corner.
Rnd 1. Ch 1, sc evenly around the blanket, placing a (sc, ch 1, sc) in each corner, sl st to the first sc to join.
Change to Grey with a sl st in any corner.
Rnd 2. Ch 3, dc evenly around the blanket, placing a (dc, ch 1, dc) in each corner, sl st to the first dc to join.
Change to Fisherman with a sl st to any corner.
Rnd 3. Ch 1, hdc evenly around the blanket, placing a (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in each corner, sl st to the first hdc to join.
Change to Grey with a sl st in any corner.
Rnd 4. Ch 1, sc evenly around the blanket, placing a (sc, ch 1, sc) in each corner, sl st to the first sc to join.
Change to Fisherman with a sl st to any corner.
Rnd 5. Ch 1, sc evenly around the blanket, placing a (sc, ch 1, sc) in each corner, sl st to the first sc to join.
Cut yarn and weave in all ends.
