I love a good crochet skinny summer scarf pattern, which is really an all season piece. When you crochet a scarf from cotton yarn it allows for a more breathable-warm weather friendly scarf.
Bonus, this easy crochet scarf is made in crochet mesh, which works up super fast.
Wrap it once for a stylish summer scarf or wrap it a couple times for those brisk fall mornings. Where I live the mornings and evening are cool almost year round.
In the summer though, the afternoons can be blazing hot. I love a versatile skinny scarf as a layering piece.

- 186yd/170m (3.5oz/100g) of #4 medium worsted weight cotton, I used less than one ball Lion Brand’s 24/7 cotton in Jade*
- 5.5mm/I hook, or hook needed to meet gauge. Pictured in Olivewood Alpha Ergonomic hook.*

- stitch markers are optional, but helpful for marking which chains to work into at the start and end to the rows.
Notes
- Stitch multiple is 3 + 5 for the foundation row.
- Skipped chains at the start of Row 1 will count as a dc + ch 2.

Fit/Adjustments
To adjust the length of your scarf, you will need a multiple of 3, so 3, 6, 9… 33, 36, etc, plus 5 for the starting chain. This pattern is worked on the long side, so your beginning chain will be the length of your scarf.
*If you’d rather work it on the short end, check out the Retta Infinity Cowl. This cotton cowl uses the same crochet mesh but it’s worked on the short end, so there’s no crocheting into a long chain.
To adjust the width of your scarf, you will only need to change your row count. Crocheting more rows will give you a wider scarf, and crocheting fewer rows will make a narrower one.
Keep in mind that any adjustments will effect the amount of yarn needed, so plan accordingly.

Skinny Summer Scarf Crochet Pattern
The Skinny Summer Scarf crochet pattern is lightweight and lacy. The crochet mesh works up fast with just one skein of yarn!
Materials
- 186yd/170m (3.5oz/100g) of #4 medium worsted weight cotton, I used less than one ball Lion Brand’s 24/7 cotton in Jade
Tools
- 5.5mm/I hook
- scissors
- yarn needle
- stitch markers are optional, but helpful for marking which chains to work into at the start and end to the rows.
Instructions
- Begin with a slip knot on your hook.
- Ch 275
- Row 1. DC in 8th ch from your hook, marked by the lime green stitch marker above, Skipped chains count as a dc + ch 2
- *{ch 2, sk next 2 chs, dc in the next ch}
- rep from * to last ch, turn. (270 sts)
- Row 2. Ch 5,
- sk next 2 chs, dc in next dc,
- *{ch 2, sk next 2 chs, dc in the next dc} rep from * across,
- the last dc will go in the 3rd ch of beginning ch 5, turn. (270 sts)
- Rows 3. Ch 5, sk next 2 chs, dc in next dc, *{ch 2, sk next 2 chs, dc in next dc} rep from * across, the last dc will go in the 3rd ch of beginning ch 5, turn. (270 sts)
- Rows 4-8. Rep Row 3.
- Cut yarn and weave in ends.
- If you would like to block your scarf, do so now. You can watch a little video I made on how to block crochet.
Skipped chains count as a dc + ch 2
Fringe
- Cut 48 pieces of 6″ lengths of yarn.
- Group them in 3.
- Loop around the end stitch of each row.
- Trim. I had some left over Lion Brand 24/7 in Camel (my favorite) so I added 1 camel to 2 jade fringe for mine.

How do you do the “block” step?
Hi Liz! Blocking is when you lay out your piece and smooth it into shape while wet. Sometimes you’ll need to pin it in place, but likely not on this one. To wet your piece you can either soak it in water or spray it. Then lay it out in position to dry. This works on natural fibers to relax the fibers and set the stitches. It will also lengthen your project or straighten it up. I hope that helps! I love the scarf, but the thought of chaining 275 scares me? I wonder if the scarf can be worked vertically! Has anyone ever tried it?
Absolutely! I actually hate working into long chains… not sure if anyone likes it! I chose to work the length of the scarf first for this one to be sure I had the right size so I could keep it to only one skein. If yarn yardage is not an issue you could start on the short end and work the length. I’d recommend starting with 21 (or a multiple of 3) + 5, so chain 26 and follow the instructions from there. I hope that helps!
Why are we instructed to cut 16 pieces of yarn for the fringe, when that doesn’t even come close to what we need. Am I missing something?
