The texture on this chunky blanket is divine. And it’s such a simple technique – just alternating stitches in the back loop and front loop.

I love the super bulky yarn for chunky crochet blanket patterns. It works up quick and it’s cozy. Plus if you’re using it on the floor to lay a little one on, then it’s thicker and makes for better padding!

This Simply Chunky yarn* made a really soft cozy blanket. I love how Paintbox has lots of colors available! Scroll on down for the free crochet blanket pattern.

Yarn Substitutions: Can I substitute yarns? Yes, of course! You can use any #6 superbulky yarn. I know many crocheters love Bernat Blanket Yarn and Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick for these chunky blankets.

For this blanket, I use a regular single crochet on the first few rows, the first and last stitches of each row and the last few rows to form a subtle border.

This is the perfect gift for a baby boy. The texture is beautiful and it’s sure to be a hit at baby showers.

This is an easy pattern. An entire blanket of only the single crochet stitch and just a one row repeat.

Depending on your level of crochet experience, it’s a great project for relaxing. Plus chunky baby blanket patterns work up so fast using that super chunky yarn.

  2. OR ch 71 (119, 145, 177, 197, 237) and sc in the 2nd ch and in each ch across, turn. (70, 118, 144, 176, 196, 236 sts)
  3. Row 2. Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next stitch and in each st across to the end of the row, turn. (70, 118, 144, 176, 196, 236 sts)

  5. Row 4. Ch 1, sc in same st and in next 2 sts, *{flo sc in next st, blo sc in next st} rep from * until there are 3 sts left, sc in last 3 sts, turn.
  6. Rep Row 4 until work measures 36”/91cm (58”/147.5cm, 88”/223.5cm, 88”/223.5cm, 88”/223.5cm, 88”/223.5cm) long, or to your desired length.
  7. Rep Row 2 for 4 rows total = 2”/5cm.
  8. Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Notes

If you want to add an additional border, you can join yarn with a sl st to any corner. Single crochet evenly around the entire blanket. In each corner place (sc, ch 1, sc). When you get back around to your first st, join with a sl st. Now you can add any border you like or finish off. Remember any changes will require more yarn.
