ch(s) – chain(s)
dc – double crochet
rep – repeat

Notes
- Ch 3 to start a row counts as a stitch, I highly recommend using a ch 3 alternative, like one of these standing stitches.
- Ch 1 to start a row does not count as a stitch.
- The stitch multiple is 5 + 3 for the foundation chain.
This is a great stitch pattern for so many projects. Check it out in the Alza Scarf a free crochet pattern that’s perfect for all skill levels.
The different colors are thanks to the self-striping yarn. But this stitch pattern looks great with color changes too.

This is a swatch from the video tutorial for the Alza scarf. I crochet in the back bump here which leaves a nice edge.
Notes
A color change is a great way to customize your crochet projects. This simple two row repeat is perfect. You can crochet the double crochet rows in the main color and choose a contrasting color for the single crochet and chain rows.
