The Stitch
I chose to use the mini bean stitch for the sunflower center. It has such great texture. And it really resembles a sunflower.
To keep the sunflower looking like the real thing, I had to use dark brown so it’s a bit hard to see. I use a medium brown in the video tutorial. You can also check out the Pebbled Beanie to see the same textured stitch.
And if you prefer, you can use 3 rounds of double crochet instead.
How to Use this Crochet Applique
- Add to a crochet granny square. Make several in different colors and create a sunflower granny square blanket!
- Make a set in cotton yarn and gift them as coasters. You might like my coaster printable gift label.
- Crochet two and sew them to the bottom of a scarf, one on each end.
- Sew this sunflower on to baby hats for those summer showers! Check out this simple summer sun hat pattern.
- A sunflower would make crochet tote bags look beautiful.
- This would make a pretty appliqué on a baby blanket too.

Crochet Sunflower Applique

Materials

Tools
- 5mm US size (H)-8 hook
- tapestry needle
- measuring tape
- scissors
Instructions
- In Brown.
Start with a mc.
Rnd 1. Place 6 mb in mc, sl st to first st to join. (6 mb + 6 chs = 12 sts) Since the mb creates a st and the ch 1 creates a st we will work into all 12 of these sts in the next rnd. - Rnd 2. Ch 1 loosely, mb into each st around, sl st to first st to join. (12 mb + 12 ch 1 = 24 sts)
- Rnd 3. Ch 1 loosely, mb in same st and next stitch, sk next st, *{mb in next 2 sts, sk next st} rep from * around, sl st to first st to join. (16 mb + 16 chs = 32 sts) Leave a long tail in brown if sewing onto another crochet project.
- Change to yellow.
Rnd 4. *{Ch 4, in same st place a tr, ch 4 and sl st to same st = one petal, sl st over to next st} rep from * in each st around. (32 petals) This rnd gets wavy, that’s ok. That’s what we want for the petal rnd. - Cut yarn and weave in end, except for the brown yarn tail (if sewing on your sunflower).
- Use the brown tail to sew down your appliqué.
Follow around the top of Rnd 2. - Cut yarn and weave in end.
